TL;DR
iOS 27’s developer beta contains code references to “foldState,” hinge angle detection, a secondary display, and dual cover glass. Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected in September at around $2,000.
Apple did not announce a foldable iPhone at WWDC 2026. But the first developer beta of iOS 27 is full of evidence that one is coming, and soon.
Software researcher M1Astra discovered code strings inside the beta that reference folding hardware directly. One mechanism is labelled “foldState.” Others include “mechanicalAngleDegrees” and “angleDegrees,” suggesting the operating system can determine how widely a device is opened around its hinge.
What the code reveals
The operating system also contains references to a secondary display, a second cover glass, and two additional light sensors within an updated Apple service utility for display repair. These entries are consistent with a book-style foldable that has both an inner and outer screen.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has tracked Apple’s foldable development for years, reports the device is slated for a September debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro family. It will start at around $2,000, competing directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold.
The software features that make sense on a fold
Several new iOS 27 features appear designed specifically for a larger, flexible display. Widgets are now available in a full-page format, allowing apps like Music, News, and Weather to fill an entire home screen.
In macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple updated iPhone Mirroring so a connected phone can resize to iPad-sized layouts. Bloomberg previously reported that iPad-like dimensions would be central to the foldable iPhone experience, with a rumoured 7.8-inch display when open and a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Apple also introduced a concept it calls “app adaptability” during the Platforms State of the Union session. “Now, instead of designing for specific devices and orientations, you’re designing for a dynamic range of sizes and aspect ratios,” the company told developers.
Why Apple is late and why it might not matter
Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold in 2019. Seven years later, Apple is entering a category that its biggest rival has already iterated on six times.
But Apple has done this before. It was not first to market with a smartphone, a tablet, a smartwatch, or wireless earbuds. In each case, it entered late with a more polished product and took the category’s profit share.
The $2,000 question
The price positions the foldable iPhone above every current iPhone, including the Pro Max. At $2,000, Apple is not trying to make foldables mainstream. It is adding a new tier at the top of the lineup.
Whether the market is ready for a $2,000 iPhone depends on whether the unfolded experience is compelling enough to justify the premium. The iOS 27 code suggests Apple thinks it is. September will determine whether customers agree.
