Waymo launches a $29.99/month subscription for its most frequent robotaxi riders

TL;DR

Waymo launched a $29.99/month subscription called Waymo Premier. Invite-only in SF, LA, Phoenix. Offers priority matching and 10% loyalty credits per trip.

Waymo is launching a $29.99 per month subscription tier called Waymo Premier, targeting its most frequent riders in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. The plan is invite-only to start. Subscribers get prioritised matching, up to five free cancellations per month, and earn 10% back in loyalty credits, called Waymo Cash, on every trip.

“You spoke, and we listened to how we can offer an even more elevated experience for you, our top riders,” the Alphabet-owned company said in a blog post on Thursday.

The subscription is a play for recurring revenue from power users in markets where demand is highest. Waymo leads the US robotaxi market with 577 vehicles in Texas alone, compared to Tesla’s 42, and is expanding aggressively. A London launch is planned for later this year.

Revenue matters. Alphabet’s Other Bets segment, which includes Waymo, lost $2.1 billion in Q1 2026, widening from $1.22 billion a year earlier. Revenue in the segment dropped to $411 million from $450 million. A subscription tier that locks in high-frequency riders helps close the gap between the cost of running an autonomous fleet and the revenue it generates.

Waymo raised $16 billion in February at a $126 billion valuation, more than double its October 2024 valuation. Alphabet contributed alongside outside investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, and T. Rowe Price. That capital is funding fleet expansion, including the rollout of its cheaper sixth-generation Ojai robotaxi built by China’s Geely.

The Premier tier is modest in scope but signals where the business model is heading. At $29.99 per month, the subscription alone is not transformative. But prioritised matching in high-demand markets solves the biggest friction point for regular users: wait times during peak hours. For riders who already take multiple Waymo trips per week, the loyalty credits make the subscription pay for itself.

The competitive context is relevant. Amazon’s Zoox has not launched commercially. Waymo paused operations in five cities after a flood-detection software failure in May, but has since resumed service. Tesla’s robotaxi fleet remains a fraction of Waymo’s. With no viable US rival at scale, Waymo has the luxury of building a loyalty programme before it actually needs one.
