Google Wallet is now the place to go to track your packages

Psychology studies have proven that the anticipation of receiving something that you’ve ordered is often greater than the joy you get from the actual item. So now you can get a dopamine hit every time you check your Google Wallet.

Google just added the ability to view and track your orders right in Google Wallet. The feature is available right now in the US.

Tracking at a glance, with a few caveats

Google Wallet will show detailed receipts, tracking numbers, and shipping status.

When you open the Google Wallet app, you’ll see orders that are arriving soon right next to your passes. You can click View more to display all orders.

Provided, that is, that the order is associated with your Gmail, you have package tracking enabled in Gmail settings, and the order is through a supported merchant.

To turn on package tracking in Gmail on an Android device, open the app and go to Menu > Settings > [account name]. Then go to General and next to Package tracking you can check or uncheck the option.

Or you can open Gmail on a computer, then click Settings > See all settings. In the General tab, find Package Tracking and select Turn on package tracking. Make sure to click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

To then enable package tracking in Google Wallet, there are two methods, one for the app and one for a computer.

In the app, go to View more > View more transactions. Find the order and select it and then select Track package. You can then find and select your order. Tapping and holding the tracking or order number will redirect you to the carrier’s website for more detailed information.

On the Google Wallet website, select Transactions on the left side of the screen. Find and click your order. Click Track package to be redirected to the carrier’s website for more detailed information.

Google did not say which merchants are participating, but on the support page said: “A large number of the top US merchants are supported, but not all merchants. If the order is from a smaller merchant or merchant is not from the US, it may not be displayed in Wallet.”
