What you need to know

  • Commodore announces that pre-orders for its Callback 8020 are live, and users can take advantage of a day-one code for an extra discount.
  • Consumers adding CHICKENLIPS to their Callback 8020 pre-order at checkout will receive an additional $50 off its new $399 price.
  • The Callback 8020 in BASIC Beige, ProtoPET White, SX Silver, and Starlight Edition can be pre-ordered for $399, while additional bundles start at $640.

Commodore’s got a blast from the past that’s here—now. The company shared details regarding pre-orders and a discount that consumers can use today only.

Commodore’s press release today (June 30) highlights the launch of pre-orders for the Callback 8020. This phone takes us back to Y2K (in a way). Pre-orders are live for the phone for $399. The company says this is a “smart flip phone designed for modern life, not modern distractions.” However, while pre-orders are live (and cheaper than before), consumers can cash in on another $50 off.

Android Central’s Take

The Callback 8020 is interesting purely because of how different it is. It breaks the “norm” that Commodore’s CEO and president realizes consumers have become accustomed to. I like the wildcard. The one that does things its own way without fear. The Callback 8020 is an interesting phone, and the hype is clearly real.

Interested parties pre-ordering the Callback 8020 on June 30 can add the CHICKENLIPS discount code at checkout. Consumers can use this code anytime between now and 11:59 pm PDT on June 30.

Leading up to today’s pre-orders, Commodore states it amassed 100,000 waitlisted users in two weeks. The company’s CEO and president, Peri Fractric, said, “The modern world is defined by distractions, and nowhere is this more debilitating than in social media.” Fractric adds, “Most phones are built to keep you looking down. Callback is built to help you look up again.”

What’s more, Peri Fractric touches on one of the major hallmarks of the Callback 8020: its strong privacy. Fractric says that the strong interest the phone has garnered over the past couple of weeks indicates users are tired of the “data-stealing” phones and devices that have come to “define modern life” over the past 20 years.

Commodore had to return to the spotlight a bit earlier than it wanted recently. After the Callback 8020’s debut, consumers weren’t too pleased about its price point. Commodore stated in a follow-up announcement that it worked to address that major consumer issue with its partners. The result is what we’ve seen again as pre-orders open: the Callback 8020 is now available for $399. The company was able to drop its original price by $ 100 to meet consumers’ desires.

Commodore stressed that this wasn’t an easy task, simply due to how smartphones are made. Privacy, the current worldwide RAM issue, and accessories were named as the chief issues it needed to address before handling the price concerns. As such, Commodore has split many of these additional options into bundles consumers can pick from during checkout.
