We’re finally getting a closer look at the Clicks Communicator, the phone that caused a stir at CES in January.
Even though there wasn’t much to show back then, all that was needed to peak interest was the look of a BlackBerry-like device that runs Android and promises to curb device addiction.
Now, Clicks has posted a full six minutes and 25 seconds of a working prototype to YouTube.
It goes a bit more behind the scene, or more to the point, behind the screen than what we’ve seen before. This is the first time we’re getting to see the device in action.
Clicks Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Gadway starts off with a look at the Communicator’s homescreen.
There’s an alphabetically ordered app ribbon, and favorite apps can be set to be front and center, along with widgets that can control active apps like Spotify.
Gadway demonstrates how the keyboard surfaces apps as soon as he starts typing their names.
A better look at the hardware
There are lots of hardware details to take in.
There are speakers on the top and bottom of the device. And one one of the most startling and most welcome throwbacks on the Communicator after the keyboard is the 3.5mm headphone jack. The Communicator has a total of three microphones: one on the top, one on the bottom, and one on the back.
A fingerprint sensor is built into the space bar of the keyboard.
Access to the SIM card and micro SD card is achieved by popping off the back cover. The process does not require tools. The battery is not removable.
More details to come before shipping
The Communicator comes in three colors: Smoke (a whitish color with the smallest hint of gray), Onyx (a solid black), and Clover (a deep green). It can be customized with an array of back covers that come in various colors.
In the video, Gadway said that in the weeks to come, other demonstrations will follow for the kill switch, the touch-sensitive keyboard, the message hub, the signal light, the prompt key, and more.
Certifications are still to come, and the Communicator is set to be in beta testing this quarter, with devices expected to ship sometime in the fourth quarter. The company is taking reservations for the Communicator now.
