Google Messages just got smarter about sharing with groups

If you own an Android device, chances are you’re using Google Messages to communicate with people nearly every single day. It’s the go-to app because it is the default option on a ton of different devices. But it also provides a great messaging experience, which makes it harder for third-party companies to compete.

While it’s the clear winner for now, Google still manages to deliver new features and updates to keep the experience fresh. With that said, it looks like Messages is getting a small update that looks to improve how things are shared with a group. This new update will provide users with a more streamlined approach to messaging multiple people.

Small changes, big impact

The post comes from Reddit, with Android Authority picking it up and sharing the news. If you have access to this update, you will now get a new screen when trying to share content through Messages. The new UI will have the option to send whatever you’re trying to share to a group or to each person separately.

It’s a kind of nice touch, making it easier to share content and how you want to share it. You don’t always want to share it with everyone all at once, but you want to get it out to as many people as possible at the same time. This new feature makes that possible.

The user on Reddit performed some experimentation with the new update and reports that there are limitations with the new method. For example, it cannot execute a shared instance mixing MMS and RCS recipients at the moment. If you do try to do this, you’ll get a prompt stating that you need to remove the MMS users.

Furthermore, if you create a new group of people, but it’s already an existing group that you messaged before, it will utilize the original instance. This is a nice touch that ensure that chat will stay clean, without any redundant groups. You can update your Google Messages app, but there’s the possibility that it might not show up for you yet.

Personally, I’m not seeing this change at the moment. If you’re in the same boat, you’ll just have to be patient. If you’re got your hands on it, let us know in the comments. Is this something that helps your experience? Or were you looking for Google to drop some other update?
