Despite Google Pixels getting better in pretty much every regard over time, the battery complaints keep following Pixel phones.
Over the past few months, my Pixel’s battery life fell off a cliff. A phone that used to make it home from work and survive dinner prep and a TikTok scroll was suddenly hitting the red at a late lunch.
I didn’t understand how bad it had become until I noticed I was carrying a charger to work every day again. So I set out to fix it, with no idea how deep the issue really ran.
I started where everyone starts
The usage list always has a villain
My first stop was the battery usage screen, which you reach through settings when you want to find what’s draining the battery.
The usual suspects were right at the top. Instagram and the other social apps, YouTube, and a couple of games I barely remembered installing.
That list is useful most of the time because a single misbehaving app really can wreck your day. Sorting by usage tells you where your power goes, and it’s the correct first move whenever a phone starts dying early.
So I trusted it, picked my targets, and started cutting them down.
Every fix that usually works
I opened each heavy app and restricted its background data, which lives under Settings > Apps > [the app], then Mobile data & Wi-Fi.
Turning off background data stops an app from syncing and phoning home while you’re not using it, and for something like a social app that constantly refreshes, that can give you back a big chunk of power.
I checked that Adaptive Connectivity was still on, since it quietly saves battery by dropping you off 5G when you don’t need the speed. I left Adaptive Battery running for the same reason.
I even uninstalled a couple of games I never played, on the theory that fewer background processes means fewer wake-ups. This particular kind of cleanup pays off over a week.
I also turned off the always-on display and reduced my screen timeout, since the display is usually the single biggest power drain on any phone.
Then I turned on the battery saver a little earlier than usual, which cuts down background activity and tweaks performance to maximize whatever charge is left.
The battery life ticked up, but only barely.
The techniques were right, but the target was wrong
Nothing at the app layer was ever going to fix this
When I mentioned the drain at work, someone told me I wasn’t imagining it, and a quick Reddit search showed how widespread the problem had become.
Looking into other people’s experiences led me to something I didn’t know about. The leading theory tied the drain to a system bug, and not any app I could touch.
The suspect is Doze, the power-saving system that throttles background activity when your phone sits idle.
At first, it only activated when the screen was off and the phone was sitting still. However, it was later updated to work even while the device is moving.
Its heavier tier, Deep Doze, keeps your battery almost catatonic during the hours the phone goes untouched. It reduces CPU activity to the bare minimum, allowing scheduled, well-spaced wake-ups for sync and other periodic tasks.
Doze runs beneath the app layer as a system-level function, which is exactly why my afternoon of restricting apps did so little. When Doze stops working, apps never have to sleep, no matter what any of your settings say.
The trigger was the update all along
And there’s precedent for exactly this
The battery drain aligned almost exactly with the March 2026 update, which appeared to roughly halve everyone’s idle battery endurance overnight.
Google hasn’t confirmed the mechanism, since it rarely does, but the timing and the symptoms fit the Doze theory well.
Doze has broken before, too, including a Doze bug caught during the Android 16 beta. A system-level feature failing quietly is far harder to spot than a power-hungry app, which is why so many of us blamed the obvious thing first.
That’s what’s frustrating about this issue. Every technique I tried made sense on paper, and, on a normal week, any of them might have helped, but none could reach the actual fault.
The wait is the hard part
The complaints weren’t fully substantiated until after the April update, and the May patch didn’t kill the bug the way people hoped it would.
Rolling back isn’t an option on the Pixel 10 series, thanks to a new anti-rollback bootloader that shipped with the May update. Owners of affected models have a little more room to downgrade, but no real fix waiting there.
That might mean it’s a genuinely tricky problem, or that too much attention is going toward the Android 17 release for the bug to get patched right now.
It isn’t a visibility problem, though. Google has acknowledged the issue and handed it a Severity One rating on the Issue Tracker, which is as high as the scale goes.
My takeaway after weeks of tinkering is that the toolkit still matters, and I’ll run those steps again tomorrow. But for anyone facing the same issue, knowing the difference between a hungry app and a broken system saves you from chasing a fix that isn’t yours to make.
