After a month with both Pixels, I learned which size will make you resent your phone daily

Having both the Google Pixel 10 Pro and the Pixel 10 Pro XL in the house turned into an accidental experiment.

I’m a one-handed phone person, so the 6.3-inch Pro was always going to be mine. My partner watches more videos in a week than I manage in a month, so the 6.8-inch XL went to her.

You live with the habits a phone builds around itself. Every time one of us picked up the other’s phone, we were admitting something. By week four, everything added up to a verdict.

Pixel 10 Pro XL after a week: surprises, disappointments, and intriguing questions

These two phones are practically the same. Same Tensor G5, same 16GB of RAM, same triple camera setup, and Gemini features.

The XL charges faster, up to 45W wired and 25W wireless, against the Pro’s 30W and 15W, and has a bigger battery.

XL also starts at 256GB, where the Pro starts at 128GB, though we both went 256GB anyway, the sensible floor for either phone.

What’s left is size, weight, screen, and battery, and that’s what this experiment revolves around.

Her phone kept ending up in my hands

What ten minutes of video calling exposed

Every time you grab the other person’s phone, you’re admitting yours can’t do something, or can’t do it as well.

Her side of the ledger showed up on family video calls, which in this house run long. Whenever she called her parents, it took about ten minutes for the phone to come my way with a “hold this for a bit.”

At around 232g, before you even add a case, keeping that phone up is a forearm exercise. I couldn’t blame her, because my arm was tired too after the call was over.

It has happened so often that now, when we want to catch up, she asks me to call her parents on my phone.

I borrowed her XL only once during a flight. She was asleep, her phone was there, so I Quick Shared the movie I wanted to watch from my phone and switched screens.

The 6.8-inch panel is just better for a movie. And with it leaning against my water bottle on the tray table, the weight never came into it.

The workarounds neither of us planned for

Both phones sent us shopping

Neither phone’s problems went away, but each one trained us to work around them. Mine came in week two.

On my busiest days, that 4,870mAh battery died sooner than I’d planned for. My workaround was a Qi2 power bank, which also made my phone thicker and heavier than her caseless XL.

I bought a small phone to escape the bulk, and ironically, now have to carry it back.

But at least it’s optional. By week four, I’d figured out which days earn it, so it comes along maybe twice a week, or on days I know I’ll be shooting a lot.

Her adaptation was a different story. The XL’s screen is the entire reason she has it, but the phone made her pay to watch it.

She’d prop it against pillows or on whatever was nearby, and her wrists would complain on the nights she just held it.

Her fix was a case with a built-in stand, so now the XL parks itself on the nightstand, the kitchen bench, the couch arm. I suggested a PopSocket as an option, but she wasn’t keen.

It’s become a mini TV that she stations around the house. The case pushed an already heavy phone, and I’m not even counting the worst ergonomics.

Thirty days later, who was happier?

There’s another way to ask that question, and it’s much easier to answer. Who would be more miserable with the other one’s phone?

That would be me. She could live with my Pro. I’d resent hers by day three. What Pixel 10 Pro XL punishes are activities I do a hundred times a day.

If there’s a takeaway for anyone standing in a store weighing these two, it’s this. Don’t pick phones at their most flattering.

You might love that extra inch of screen in the store. What you don’t see is the wrist pain that shows up a hundred days in.

Also, don’t write a phone off over minor shortcomings. No phone is perfect, and I learned that many of those problems can be engineered around the right accessories.
