I thought all USB-C cables were the same; I couldn’t have been more wrong

I used to treat every USB-C cable the same. If it fit the port, I assumed it would charge my devices, transfer files, and handle everything else just as well as the next one.

So, when one cable copied files in seconds while another took several minutes, I blamed my phone or laptop instead.

It wasn’t until I started looking at the tiny specifications printed on the cables, or hidden on the product page, that I realized they weren’t interchangeable at all.

Some were designed almost exclusively for charging, while others supported much faster data transfer, higher charging speeds, or even external displays.

After I understood the differences, a lot of my everyday USB-C frustrations finally made sense.

USB-C only describes the physical connector, not what the cable is capable of doing. Two USB-C cables can look identical while supporting very different features.

One might only handle charging and USB 2.0 data speeds. Another can transfer files at tens of gigabits per second, power a high-performance laptop, and even connect to an external monitor.

The cable that took ages to copy photos from an external SSD wasn’t necessarily faulty. It wasn’t designed for high-speed data transfers.

Likewise, another cable that charged my phone perfectly couldn’t drive my monitor because it didn’t support video output. The connector fit both devices, but the cable itself lacked the features I needed.

Instead of assuming every USB-C cable is interchangeable, I now pay attention to these specifications: data transfer speed, charging wattage, and DisplayPort or Thunderbolt support.

A fast charger is only part of the equation

After I realized USB-C cables aren’t all built the same, I stopped assuming any cable would let my charger perform at its best.

One of the biggest surprises was learning that a fast charger alone isn’t enough.

Your charger, device, and cable must support the same charging capabilities. If any one of them falls short, the entire setup drops to the lowest common denominator.

That means plugging a 100W laptop charger into a laptop that supports 100W doesn’t guarantee you’ll get 100W.

If you’re using a basic USB-C cable, the charging speed may be limited to 60W, even though both the charger and laptop are capable of much more.

The reason comes down to the cable itself. Most entry-level USB-C charging cables are rated for 3A, which limits them to 60W (20V × 3A).

To carry more current, you need a 5A cable, and those cables include an e-marker chip: a tiny integrated circuit that tells the charger exactly how much power the cable can safely handle.

If that chip isn’t present, the charger automatically limits output to protect the cable.

You can’t tell whether a USB-C cable has an e-marker chip just by looking at it.

Check the cable’s spec sheet or product page; manufacturers typically mention if it’s e-marked.

Not every USB-C cable is built for fast file transfers

One of the first clues that not all USB-C cables were created equal came when I started copying large files between devices.

I’d use one cable to connect my external SSD to my laptop, and a folder full of photos or videos would transfer in seconds.

Swap it for another USB-C cable, and the same job took much longer. I blamed my SSD at first, but the cable was the bottleneck.

The reason is that many USB-C cables only support USB 2.0 speeds, which top out at 480Mbps.

While it’s suitable for charging a phone or syncing files, it’s significantly slower than USB 3.2 (5Gbps to 20Gbps) or USB4 (up to 40Gbps with certified cables).

And even then, your computer, storage device, and cable all have to support the same standard, or the connection falls back to the slowest one.

Now I keep a high-speed cable with my external SSD and use my basic USB-C cables mainly for charging. It saves me from wondering why one cable copies files in seconds while another takes minutes.

One of the most confusing USB-C issues I encountered occurred when I tried connecting my laptop to an external monitor.

The cable fit perfectly into both devices, so I expected everything to work. Instead, the monitor stayed blank. After checking the display settings and trying different ports, I eventually discovered the problem was the cable.

I’d assumed every USB-C cable could carry video, but that’s not how USB-C works. The connector may be the same, but video support depends on both the devices and the cable.

Many USB-C monitors utilize DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode), enabling a USB-C connection to transmit DisplayPort video signals in addition to standard USB data.

If the cable doesn’t support the necessary data lanes or is primarily designed for charging and basic USB 2.0 data transfer, it may not be capable of carrying a video signal at all.

Now, whenever I buy a USB-C cable that I plan to use with a monitor or docking station, I look for explicit support for DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt 3/4/5.

I finally knew which USB-C cable to reach for

Learning how charging works also changed the way I buy and use USB-C cables.

I don’t assume every cable should support the highest possible wattage because most of my devices don’t need it. Instead, I match the cable to the device I’m charging.

  • Phone charging: A 60W (3A) USB-C cable is more than enough for almost all smartphones and tablets.
  • Laptop charging: I use a 100W (5A) cable for laptops that charge at 65W to 100W.
  • External SSDs: I look for a cable that supports USB 3.2 or USB4 so large files don’t get stuck at USB 2.0 speeds.
  • External monitors and docks: I make sure the cable explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt 3, depending on what I’m connecting.

When I purchase a new cable, I always check the specifications. Many certified USB-C cables are now labeled as 60W or 240W, in line with the latest USB-IF branding.

Reputable cables also indicate their maximum data transfer rate, which can be 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps, or 40Gbps. Certified products often carry USB-IF performance logos that clearly identify these capabilities.

Previously, I assumed every USB-C cable did the same job. If it fit the port, I expected it to charge my devices, transfer files, and connect to a monitor without any issues.

Now I know the connector is only part of the story. The cable determines how much power it can carry, how fast it can transfer data, and whether it supports features like video output. That’s why two cables that look identical can perform so differently.

These days, I carefully check the specifications before buying a cable.
