Every year, there’s a ton of coverage around foldable phones, yet you rarely see them in the wild. That’s because they’re just too expensive and aren’t really built with most people in mind. So, why are brands like Samsung pushing the genre even further with trifold phones?
Well, because the technology is there, and Samsung wants to flex some of its tech prowess a bit. But there’s also a very small group of people that are willing to plop down $2,900 for a phone. The Galaxy Z TriFold came out in limited numbers and instantly sold out in the US. So, it only makes sense to deliver a sequel, right?
It’s coming, but you’ll have to wait a year
According to Electronic Times, Samsung is looking to debut its next trifold phone in 2027 (via 9to5Google). As of now, the phone is still in the early stages of development, but the source is stating that the display sizes will remain near identical to the original.
While foldable phones deliver more screen real estate, none have really maximized the inner display until the TriFold was introduced. The screen size matches what you’d find on a standard tablet, making it possible to utilize the screen real estate.
This larger screen is great for media but also for excellent multitasking. In total, Samsung is expected to launch four foldable phones in the second half of the year. That means we can expect new entries in the Z Fold Ultra, Z Fold, Z Flip, and Z TriFold lineups. The real question is how much will the trifold cost?
The Galaxy line will be packed in 2027
In addition to new foldables, the news outlet also shared that there will be four Galaxy phones introduced in the first half of the year. Samsung has traditionally launched its Galaxy S series phones in the first quarter of the year. So far, we’ve seen the lineup include three models up until this point, but it looks like that could change.
According to the article, Samsung will reportedly introduce a Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro. It doesn’t go into detail how this model will differ from its siblings, but it’s anyone’s guess at this point. The Galaxy S Ultra has been the top-end offering for Samsung for years now, so it will be interesting to see how the Pro model will differentiate itself.
The hype is real
Samsung recently launched its Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra phones, and for the most part, the focus has been on the former, with its wider design that’s getting a ton of praise. Despite brands trying this approach before, it didn’t work out.
But Samsung seems to have hit the nail on the head. Being at the right place at the right time with the right technology. If that wasn’t enough, there are reports that Apple will also release a phone with a similar design in just a few months.
Before that, Google is the next brand to unveil phones, with an event taking place in August. Despite Google’s original foldable being a wide format, it ditched that design for a taller look in the following models. It’s unclear whether it will unveil a wider foldable this year, but it’s most likely looking closely at the landscape to see whether it’s something worth investing in.
