X Money can cut off your account over what you post

July 28, 2026

X Money went live on Monday. Buried in its support pages is a rule that no ordinary bank applies to a current account.

“If your X account is suspended for violating Child Safety or Violent and Hateful Entities policies, you will lose Money access,” the company FAQ states. Any remaining balance “will be mailed to you via check”.

Suspensions under every other policy leave the account untouched, the same page says. X has drawn a line, and it sits inside a moderation team rather than a compliance department.

Holding the money at all requires an X account “in good standing”. The eligibility list says so plainly.

It is not quite a bank account

TNW City Coworking space – Where your best work happens

A workspace designed for growth, collaboration, and endless networking opportunities in the heart of tech.

X markets a deposit account. Its own paperwork uses a different term.

The rate table is headed “Money Stored Value Account Rates”. The sweep bank list describes “X Money Stored Value Account program funds”. The interest rules sit in the Stored Value Account Terms of Service.

A stored value account is not the same instrument as a deposit held in your name at a bank. That difference explains why every insurance promise in the marketing carries conditions.

The rate, and what it costs to get

X advertises “up to 6.00% APY”. The rate table is more precise.

Premium+ subscribers earn 6.00%. Premium subscribers earn 4.00%, rising to 6.00% only if they direct deposit $1,000 or more within a trailing 34 day period. The transfer must run over ACH with the code PDD. Both rates are “variable and subject to change at any time”.

Premium+ costs $40 a month, or $395 a year, according to TechCrunch. At 6%, a balance needs to reach roughly $6,600 before the interest merely repays the subscription.

Below that figure, the best advertised savings rate in America produces a net loss.

Where does 6% come from?

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, asked that in writing three months ago. Her 14 April letter to Elon Musk was blunt.

“It is unclear what risky investments, intrusive data monetization activities, or gimmicks either X Money or Cross River may intend to engage in to pay that yield when the target Federal Funds Rate is 3.5-3.75%,” she wrote.

A yield of 6% sits above the risk-free rate, so something has to fund the gap. Warren also warned that “consumers, our national security, and the stability of the financial system may be at risk”.

The $10m promise, and its exception

X offers up to $10m of FDIC cover, which it calls 40 times the standard amount. A sweep programme run by IntraFi spreads money across other banks to reach that figure.

The FAQ then asks whether the programme guarantees that no more than $250,000 lands at any single bank. The answer is one word.

“No.” The design aims to stay under the cap, X says, but “there is no guarantee it will always achieve this”. Anything above $250,000 at one institution becomes “ineligible for FDIC deposit insurance”.

A second condition matters more. Swept funds are aggregated with any money you already hold at the same bank. The published list names 46 destination institutions, among them Truist, KeyBank, Huntington, Citizens and M&T.

Customers of those banks could cross the limit without ever choosing to. Opting out of the sweep is possible, and caps cover at $250,000.

Everyone else queued for a charter

The licence belongs to Cross River Bank, which confirmed on Monday that it powers the service.

Rivals took the slow road. Wise applied for a US trust charter, and regulators turned it down. Klarna pursued a US licence, then launched savings at 3.28%. Palmer Luckey built Erebor from scratch at an $8bn valuation. Bunq has ground through a long US expansion.

X rented the permissions instead, which is faster, cheaper and entirely legal.

Cross River also carries a regulatory record. In March 2023 the FDIC issued a consent order over unsafe or unsound practices in its fair lending compliance. As Banking Dive reported, the order barred the bank from taking on new third-party partnerships without FDIC approval. Public records show no termination, and Warren’s letter named that action directly.

The fees X calls low

Instant debit card withdrawals cost 1.75%, with a minimum of $0.25. A replacement metal card costs $35 after the first one. Two day cheque delivery costs $25.

Premium subscribers get two free domestic wires a year and pay $20 for each one after that. Premium+ subscribers send them free.

What Synapse taught

Conditional insurance has been tested before. The middleware provider Synapse collapsed in April 2024, and more than 100,000 people lost access to over $265m. Roughly $95m went missing.

Customers of apps such as Yotta had read the same reassuring phrase about FDIC cover. X Money differs in one important respect, because the accounts sit at a real bank and IntraFi’s service is ordinary plumbing.

Two states said no

X holds money transmitter licences in 41 states and Washington DC. New York and Massachusetts have granted none. Warren represents Massachusetts.

None of this means X Money will stumble. It means the marketing page and the support pages describe different products. Only one of them explains what happens to your balance if you break a posting rule.
