Procore’s AI can read a construction project’s paperwork. Now it is paying $845m to give that AI eyes on the actual site.
The construction-software company said it will buy DroneDeploy, a reality-capture and robotics firm, for about $845m in cash, Procore announced. DroneDeploy’s drones, ground robots and cameras are used on more than 3 million jobsites in over 180 countries.
Eyes for the digital coworker
Procore has spent the year building AI agents it calls digital coworkers. They handle construction paperwork: requests for information, submittals, safety reviews. Last week it expanded the line to 20 agents. One customer, the design-build firm Haskell, says it cut submittal reviews from seven days to ten minutes.
The catch is that agents reading documents are half-blind. They know what the plans say, not what the site looks like. DroneDeploy supplies the missing sense. It captures 3D imagery from the air and the ground. The AI can then compare the plan with the physical build and flag problems early.
Procore frames the goal plainly. “Adding DroneDeploy’s technology into the Procore platform will… deliver digital coworkers that track what’s happening on a project, make sense of it, and then take action to change the outcome,” said chief executive Ajei Gopal.
The prize is the data
The real asset is what the two companies can see together. Procore brings a record of construction decisions: nearly 400 million photos and more than 126 million drawings. It also logged over 10 million requests, submittals and inspections in the past year. DroneDeploy brings roughly 20 trillion square feet of visual data and more than 100,000 labelled safety issues.
That scale matters for AI. As Procore puts it, access to the right data is what separates a demo from a mission-critical product. It is the same bet playing out across industrial AI and robotics. Whoever holds the real-world data trains the better model.
Bought on a good day
The timing was pointed. Procore announced the deal the same afternoon it reported its second-quarter results. Those showed its first GAAP operating profit, and revenue up 16% to $375m. A newly profitable company can spend on a big cash deal.
The driver underneath is a labour shortage. Construction cannot hire enough skilled field workers. So Procore is pitching cameras, drones and robots that inspect a site on their own. It is automation aimed at the physical jobsite, not the office.
The deal should close later this year, subject to regulatory approval, and Procore’s guidance does not yet include DroneDeploy. If the integration works, Procore gets the full loop it has chased. It would have an AI that sees the site, understands it, and acts. No human has to walk the floor first.
