Google Wallet introduces supervised tap to pay for kids and teens

TL;DR

  • Google Wallet now supports supervised balances for kids and teens under 18 in the US, giving them a way to make digital payments with parental oversight.

  • Parents can set daily spending limits, view transaction history, receive Family Link purchase alerts, and remotely lock the Wallet if a device is lost.

  • Kids can tap to pay using their Android phone or Wear OS smartwatch anywhere Google Pay is accepted.

Giving kids money has always involved a bit of trust. Maybe it’s cash for a weekend outing, a card for an emergency, or money to grab something while they’re out with friends. The problem is that cash is easy to lose, cards can go missing, and it’s not always obvious where the money ended up. That’s exactly the problem Google Wallet is now trying to solve.

The company is rolling out supervised Google Wallet balances for children and teenagers under 18 in the US. Instead of handing your child a debit card and simply hoping they spend responsibly, you’ll be able to decide how much money they have access to while still keeping an eye on where it’s going. It’s a much more practical way to let kids start managing their own money without throwing them in at the deep end.

One of the biggest advantages is the ability to set daily spending limits. Say your teenager is heading to the movies or spending the afternoon at the mall with friends. You can make sure they have enough money for tickets or food without worrying they’ll burn through the entire balance on impulse purchases.

Keeping track of spending is easier, too. You’ll be able to view transaction history whenever you want, and if you’d rather not keep checking manually, Family Link can even send a notification whenever a purchase is made.

There’s a practical safety feature here as well. If your child’s Android phone or Wear OS smartwatch is lost, the Wallet balance can be locked remotely until the device is found. It could also come in handy if you simply want to pause spending for a while.

From your child’s perspective, things stay nice and simple. They can tap to pay anywhere Google Pay is accepted, eliminating the need to carry cash. This isn’t meant to replace a traditional bank account, but it does feel like a sensible middle ground. Kids get the freedom to make purchases on their own, while parents still have enough oversight to step in when needed.
