One of the biggest selling points of Fields Of Mistria is the detailed and varied dating life your character can have with a range of diverse NPCs. If you’re into farmhand himbos, fun-loving chefs, reserved medical professionals, actual dragons, or pretty much anything else–you’ll probably find your thing among the marriage candidates. With Fields Of Mistria 1.0 introducing the final stage of romance–marriage, cohabiting, and kids, we’ve fleshed out our guide to include everything you need to know about Heart Events, getting engaged, having kids, and the perks of being a married couple.

It’s worth remembering that if romance isn’t your thing, you can still build hearts and do heart events with your favourite characters, you’ll eventually get a choice where you designate them as Best Friend or Dating.

THIS GUIDE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE 1.0 RELEASE OF FIELDS OF MISTRIA.

How To Build Relationships In Fields Of Mistria

Friendship Points only go up, there is no way to reduce them with human NPCs (however, animals on your farm can lose hearts after poor treatment!). You can check your Friendship Points level by going into the heart icon in the menu. The illuminated hearts indicate Friendship Points, and the bar underneath shows how close you are to the next heart.

Friendship Points, stats, and gift preferences can be checked in this menu.

All NPCs in Fields Of Mistria love to receive gifts. If your love languages are acts of service and gift-giving, you’ll find building relationships a breeze. Each character has gifts that they “Love”, “Like”, “Dislike”, “Hate”, and then those they don’t mind. Check out our Fields Of Mistria Gift Guide for a more detailed breakdown of everyone’s favourite treats and how many points they’re worth. Remember you can only give one gift per day, so choose wisely! Speaking to an NPC once a day will also reward you with 7 Friendship Points.

Elsie will give you a little bit of gossip each day, telling you which character likes which gift. They won’t all be dateable, but it’ll help you get your friendship up with folk across town.

Elsie’s nosiness comes in handy when you’re trying to work out what people want.

Raising your Friendship Level will reward you with hearts, which can eventually lead to a more intense relationship. You’ll either become romantic partners with the character or Best Friends, depending on your choices. There is no way to undo this choice once you make it, though–Best Friends can’t become romantic partners, and vice versa. Once you are engaged, all other characters you are currently Dating will change to Best Friends automatically, and write you a letter to confirm.

Heart Events In Fields Of Mistria

Once you reach a high enough Friendship Level with dateable characters, you’ll trigger Heart Events, which are side-plots that bring you and that character closer together. These sometimes involve other characters, but don’t impact your relationships with anyone other than the main NPC whose Heart Event it is.

Heart Events trigger at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 Friendship Points, and only with marriage candidates.

Heart Events let you get to know a bit more about the characters.

After the 4 Heart Event, that character will send the player birthday letters and can be invited to the Shooting Star Festival and the Harvest Festival.

After the 8 Heart Event, players can confess their feelings and begin Dating (see below for more information on Dating in Fields Of Mistria).

After 10 Hearts are reached, players can craft an Engagement Ring and propose (see below for more information on getting married in Fields Of Mistria) or become Best Friends.

Storylines can unfold platonically, so there’s no hard feelings.

How To Date In Fields Of Mistria

Once you have 8 hearts with a romance candidate, you can take them on an actual date. To do this, choose the Dating option (in pink), rather than the Best Friends option when prompted at the end of the 8 Heart Event. Once again, Elsie has all the answers, and will rock up to your house and give you the basics the morning after you officially start Dating another character.

Dates can only be requested on Saturday and Sunday, as characters have jobs to do during the week. You can date one character once a week, so if you’re Dating two characters, you can take one out on Saturday and one on Sunday.

One of the perks of dating is new photos for your house.

Dates increase Heart Level more than even loved gifts. Date Types are unlocked the same way as cosmetics–you find them while doing tasks like digging or watering, and can “learn” them from your inventory. Once you’ve unlocked a Date Type, you can use it as many times as you want. Elsie will initially give you two: Deep Woods Picnic (if you’ve unlocked Deep Woods) and Inn Meal Date. If you haven’t unlocked Deep Woods, Elsie will send you this Inspiration Item in the mail once you have.

After the first time you go on a particular date with each character, you’ll get a commemorative Date Photo which can be displayed on the wall in your home.

All Date Inspiration Items

Item Location Date Unlocked
Bath Soap Wheedle’s Stall Bathhouse Date
Dollhouse Bench Dig Spot (Eastern Road) Park Date
Inn Menu Given by Elsie Inn Meal Date
Lovely Seashell Fishing Beach Date
Picnic Set Given by Elsie Deep Woods Picnic Date
Rough Gemstone Treasure Chest (The Mines) Gem Cutting Date

You can date as many people as you want, but can only marry one. Below we give details on how to still get all the marriage gifts from each character without actually marrying them all.

Getting Married In Fields Of Mistria

Once you have decided which of the candidates you want to marry, you’ll need to complete a few things to make it happen.

First, get their Friendship Level up to 10 Hearts, complete all their Heart Events, and make sure you are officially Dating. At this point, Elsie will arrive once again to show you how to propose. She will pass on the recipe for crafting an Engagement Ring at the Forge.

Crafting the ring will itself require you to have progressed the story significantly. Several of the ingredients for the recipe require you to have completed up to at least level 90 of The Mines, so you may need to get your hands dirty before you propose.

Some marriage candidates might try and ask you first.

Once you’ve crafted a ring, take it to the character you want to marry. This will trigger a cutscene where you head off somewhere private to discuss your future. Before you make any decisions or confess anything, the character in question will give you a unique gift that can only be obtained through reaching this part of the relationship quest.

If you want, after receiving the gift, you can back away from the actual marriage, meaning you can accumulate every marriage candidate’s gift before making your final decision (see below for a full list of Fields Of Mistria Proposal Gifts).

Once you have decided, though, your character will be prompted to ask the big question. Once you are engaged, you’ll pick a wedding date on the calendar, and time will pass as usual, with your newly betrothed partner commenting on their excitement occasionally, and asking for your opinion on things like wedding color-schemes and food. Wedding dates have to be set at least 5 days from the date of your proposal.

The whole town helps out with your big day.

The wedding day starts with a visit from Elsie and Josephine, who take you to the Sleeping Dragon Inn to prepare. The whole day is a large cutscene, but your animals will be fed and petted, and crops will be watered automatically. Once you’re at the Sleeping Dragon, you can choose your outfit–either from the Wedding Attire provided by Elsie, or anything you already have in your inventory. Your spouse will also be dressed in a unique outfit at the altar.

Once the wedding begins, you’ll exchange vows and light candles to symbolize your partnership. The whole town will turn out to watch, and will come back to the Inn afterwards for a meal and toasts. Once the day is over, you and your new spouse will return to your farm and they will immediately move in. Their schedule will change from this day forward, waking up with you and prompting you to give them a kiss when you get up.

A big feast takes place after the wedding.

The day after the wedding you will receive mail from Elsie containing 3 pieces of furniture from your spouses old room, which you can place around your house to make it more comfortable for them. Spouses will interact with this furniture once it is placed.

Having A Baby In Fields Of Mistria

Two weeks after the wedding date, the player will be able to discuss having children with their spouse after being given a Mystical Feather in a bed-time cutscene and presenting it to them.

There is a choice for players as to how the baby will arrive–either delivered by The Great Bird that gifted you the Mystical Feather, one or other of you carrying it (for female characters), or the player character carrying it (if your spouse is male but regardless of your gender). The due date will then be marked in the calendar two weeks after this discussion.

Babies appear as a small bundle which can be carried by either you or your spouse, but don’t impede movement in any way. Babies can also be placed in a crib in the house and left unattended. Each baby will have a unique appearance based on you and your spouse–with appearance and gender not being customizable. You can only have one baby in Fields Of Mistria, currently, and it doesn’t grow any older as of 1.0.

All Fields Of Mistria Proposal Gifts

Discussing your future will mean a unique gift from your romantic interest.

When you propose, your newly betrothed will give you a unique gift they have made themselves. The gift will be tied to the Heart Events you completed, and ties them up neatly with something sentimental before your marriage. Each of the gifts offers a special boost in some way, or a cosmetic change to the character. Most of the gifts can be placed in your farm or worn. Here is a list of every proposal gift in Fields Of Mistria 1.0.
