Gemini in Google Messages has gone from something I barely noticed to a feature I now appreciate.
Being able to send messages through Gemini, refine awkward sentences, brainstorm without leaving a conversation, and even get caption ideas from photos makes the messaging experience feel smarter.
Together, they have made Gemini more useful inside Google Messages than I initially expected.

What I like most about Gemini in Google Messages is that I don’t have to leave the app to ask it something.
Gemini appears as its own conversation inside Messages, and I can pin it to the top so it is always within easy reach. That small detail makes a bigger difference than I expected.
Instead of opening a separate Gemini app every time I need help, I can jump into the pinned Gemini chat, ask a question, get what I need, and return to my regular conversations within seconds.
I have started using it mostly for quick brainstorming. If I am discussing a weekend plan with friends, I can ask Gemini for ideas.
If I am unsure how to respond to someone, I can ask for a few ways to phrase it (more on that in a minute).
Because this happens in Google Messages, I don’t lose the flow of what I was doing by constantly switching between apps.
There is one limitation that still bothers me, though. Gemini inside Google Messages can’t take the result and send it to one of my contacts.
Even with that limitation, I find the built-in Gemini chat useful.
Photos make Gemini much more interesting
Very handy in specific situations
Gemini became more useful to me when I started adding photos to the conversation. Text prompts are fine, but being able to attach an image gives me more to work with without leaving Google Messages.
For example, if I am about to share a vacation photo with friends, I can drop it into Gemini chat and ask for a few caption ideas.
I can ask for something funny, subtle, dramatic, or even a short one-liner, depending on the photo.
I have also found it useful when I am not sure what I am looking at or how to describe something. I can attach a photo and ask Gemini to explain it, point out notable details, or help me turn what is in the image into a better message.
That feels more natural than saving the photo, opening a separate AI app, uploading it again, and then returning to Messages.
Magic Compose understands the conversation
Add a touch of AI to those boring messages
Magic Compose is the Gemini feature in Google Messages that I use the most.
Whenever I have already typed a message but the wording does not feel quite right, I tap the + button, select Magic Compose, and let Gemini rewrite the sentence for me.
I don’t have to copy the text, jump over to Gemini, explain what I want, and paste the result into the conversation.
I can even pick from a range of styles. I can make a message sound more Chill, Excited, or Format, depending on who I am talking to.
Google also throws in playful options, such as Shakespeare and Lyrics, which I may not use every day, but they are fun when the conversation calls for something different.
There are plenty of times when I know what I want to say, but can’t get the tone right. Maybe a sentence sounds too blunt, too dry, or unnecessarily long.
Instead of rewriting it three or four times, I hand it to Magic Compose and usually get something closer to what I had in mind.
Gemini can send messages for me
A huge time saver
I can use the normal Gemini app and send a message with my voice. I can say something like, ‘Hey Gemini, tell Heema I will be home by 9 PM,’ and Gemini can prepare and send the message through Google Messages.
It is useful when my hands are occupied, or I don’t want to open Messages.
I can also take an answer Gemini has generated and ask it to send that information to someone. That is where things become much more interesting.
For example, I can ask Gemini to find my pizza recipe from Google Keep and then say, ‘Send it to Heema on Message.’
I use the same idea while traveling. I can ask Gemini to send my ETA to Jack on Messages, and it does the job without breaking a sweat.
Gemini adds serious utility to Messages
What surprised me most about Gemini in Google Messages is how naturally it fits into something I use every day. I do not need to treat it like a separate AI tool or change the way I message people.
It steps in when I need help writing something better, coming up with ideas, handling a quick message, or figuring out what to say about a photo.
Still, the integration is far from perfect. I can see plenty of room for it to become even smarter and more context-aware.
