What you need to know

  • Honor launches its Robot Phone in China with a “fully motorized” Agile Gimbal and powerful AI that pans and tilts its 200MP camera to keep your subject in frame.
  • The Robot Phone enters a “new era” of mobile cinema for users with Honor’s ARRI Cinematic Imaging Partnership, bringing ARRI LogC3 and more.
  • Honor states the phone features a 6.3-inch display, a 7,060mAh battery, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
  • The Robot Phone is available for pre-order, starting at RMB 9,999 (~$1,482)

We’ve had teasers about it all year, and Honor’s Robot Phone has launched in China with a price tag that’s reportedly been a “pleasant surprise for consumers.

In a press release, Honor states that its Robot Phone is a “revolutionary, category‑creating device that shatters the physical boundaries of traditional mobile technology…” What’s truly the highlight for the phone is its camera on a “fully motorized 3-axis mechanical gimbal.” To nail the cinematic vibes Honor’s going for, it says the Robot Phone combines ARRI Image Science with professional cinema workflows.

The attentive and curious Robot Phone camera features a 200MP duo. The main 200MP camera on the Agile Gimbal features an f/1.6 aperture within a 1/1.28-inch sensor. The other lens is a 200MP periscope telephoto lens with 2.7x optical zoom. Consumers will also find a 50MP ultrawide lens with a 122° FOV. Honor drew attention to its ARRI Cinematic Imaging Partnership during its keynote, highlighting the combined use of ARRI LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3, and ARRI Looks with its in-house H1 Image Chip.

AI plays a major role in the camerawork, too. Honor says it’s integrated AI noise reduction for videos and AI dynamic range optimization. You may remember the Robot Phone’s teasers, showing its camera moving around curiously. Honor credits that to its YOYO Robot Phone mode, which delivers AI Subject Tracking and voice source localization.

These features breathe autonomy into the Robot Phone’s cameras, so it can pan or tilt on its own to keep your subject in frame. Additionally, Honor’s YOYO AI provides gesture recognition and physical movement comprehension.

The display can reach a maximum of 120Hz refresh rate, 6,800nits of peak brightness, and 4,320Hz PWM dimming for eye comfort. Carrying its AI processes is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

To keep users going is a 7,060mAh silicon-carbon battery. Honor states its technology supports “all-day endurance.” What’s more, the phone delivers 120W wired charging and 50W wireless SuperCharge.

However, what’s continued to captivate consumers in China isn’t what it can do, but its price. Honor says consumers can expect the phone to launch officially on the market on August 18. If you’re looking to get more insight, our hands-on dives into what makes the Robot Phone feel like a DJI Pocket 3, but still stand on its own.
