TL;DR
- The $600 Motorola Edge 2026 will receive two major Android OS updates, going up to just Android 18.
- Security updates are promised for three years, with support ending in June 2029.
- Its limited support mirrors that of the Edge 2025 and falls well behind Google’s and Samsung’s update commitments for similarly priced midrangers.
With smartphone prices climbing, a $600 phone like the recently launched Motorola Edge 2026 should be an increasingly attractive proposition. It has the hardware to compete with more expensive phones, but there’s one catch that could make its reasonable price harder to swallow: its software support.
According to Motorola’s official support documents, the Edge 2026 will receive just two major Android OS updates. Since it ships with Android 16, that means this year’s Android 17 and next year’s Android 18 releases will be the only major platform upgrades that it is promised to. Security updates are promised for three years, with support ending in June 2029.

But the Edge 2026 isn’t entirely on new ground for Motorola. Last year’s Edge 2025, which launched in June 2025, also gets two OS updates and three years of security updates, with support ending in June 2028. In other words, Motorola has carried the same limited support commitment into another generation of its US Edge lineup. For a $600 phone launching in 2026, that’s a very short software support lifespan.
While Motorola is clearly still struggling to provide extended software support, brands like Google and Samsung promise seven years of major OS and security updates. Mid-range phones like the Google Pixel 10a and Samsung Galaxy A57 5G, for instance, get at least six years of updates. Motorola, meanwhile, appears to be stuck in the past, at least with its Edge lineup. The premium Razr handsets get much longer support, with the Fold family going as far as seven years.

The recent confusion about Motorola Edge 70 Max‘s expected software support duration, as documented by 9to5Google, is a good example of how embarrassing Motorola’s software support policy can get. On the UK website, Motorola says the phone will receive three years of OS updates and five years of security updates until 2031. The same website also mentions two OS upgrades and three years of support, which further contradicts the seven years of support seen in other European countries. But for the Edge 2026, it’s now pretty clear when support will end.
There’s no doubt the Motorola Edge 2026 is a decent phone. That’s what makes its software support commitment particularly frustrating. Its hardware should remain capable for years, yet Motorola plans to stop major Android upgrades after just Android 18 and security updates till June 2029.
