Two years ago, I had the privilege of going hands-on with Meta Orion glasses. It was the first time I’d used a pair of AR glasses that didn’t feel like a massively compromised experience, and while they weren’t quite ready for prime time, I knew a proper consumer version wasn’t far off.
Sure enough, Meta debuted Ray-Ban Display glasses at last year’s Meta Connect show in September. They’re not quite the full vision Orion showed me was possible, but they made the right concessions to deliver good-looking frames at a good price.
Now, a year later, I’m asking the question: have they been worth it, and should you buy them, or should you wait for the next big release?
Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses retail for $799 and are available at stores like Best Buy, where you can stop in and try a pair on. These support a narrow prescription range, so be sure to get your prescription filled when you order, since the lenses can’t be easily swapped out after ordering.
Ray-Ban Display glasses feature a display in the right lens only to reduce weight and battery use. This is a full-color display and doesn’t have the warping or light bleed found in similar glasses like Even Realities G2 or MemoMind One. The sophisticated lenses and displays are a hallmark of Meta’s glasses and a major difference from the competition.
I spoke with Lumus, the manufacturer of the waveguide displays Meta uses, to better understand how the tech works. In a nutshell, these full-color optics are built for privacy and clarity. People cannot see your display, even if they put their face right up to the outside of your glasses.
Meta’s software is also substantially more robust and mature than any other smart glasses platform I’ve used to date. It integrates directly with popular fitness services like Garmin and Strava, and supports all of Meta’s apps and services, like WhatsApp and Instagram.
Viewing Instagram feeds on the display is novel, though it’s a bit visually tiring since the display is in only one lens. You’ll never have an issue seeing things since the display gets so bright (yes, even in direct sunlight), but the monocular vision can be very jarring for some tasks.
Reading messages, navigating, checking notifications, and controlling music are all perfect examples of how this hardware shines. Even taking pictures with the built-in viewfinder feels like a major step-up from Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses, which have no display and can only give you audio feedback.
Like those glasses, Ray-Ban Display also has built-in microphones and speakers and can do everything those can do (plus more). The camera quality is excellent, and you can even zoom in using the camera viewfinder, which isn’t something supported on non-display Meta AI glasses.
Updates and apps make all the difference
When Meta launched Ray-Ban Display last year, it very much felt like a beta product. The glasses had tons of promise, but the vision clearly wasn’t complete. It didn’t even ship with the handwriting recognition feature that Mark Zuckerberg proudly showed off on stage at last year’s Connect.
One year later, Display not only has that and every other promised feature, but it also sports some fresh features Meta didn’t initially show off. My favorite feature addition so far is app support, but this comes with a big caveat. Apps all require smartphone connectivity to work, and you’ll need to add them through a beta UI panel on the Meta AI app on your phone.
The easiest way to find them is the Meta Glasses Apps website, which gives you a QR code you can scan with your phone to get it quickly added to your glasses app list.
The problem with the current crop of apps is that only 26 are available. Clearly, Meta is having just as hard a time convincing developers to make content for these glasses as it did convincing the same developers to make 2D apps for its Quest headsets.
And that’s really the core problem with Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses. While Meta has proven itself time and time again to deliver incredible support and regular updates to its excellent hardware products, the company continues to have a difficult time courting developers for its ecosystems.
The band is still the best (and worst) part
Meta’s Neural Band, which is required to interact with most of Ray-Ban Display’s UI, is truly brilliant. The band is vitally important to the experience because you can interact with the glasses without pointing or holding your hand in the air. Keep your hands in your pockets, if you like, or just leave them in your lap. It’s effortless and brilliant.
The degree of control it delivers over the floating glasses UI is astounding, and the haptic feedback you receive with each interaction is paramount to making the glasses feel like a more authentic experience. It’s essentially the touchscreen of the smart glasses world.
The band is ultra-responsive and never misses a beat. You interact with the glasses’ UI through gestures the band picks up, understanding the nuances of muscle movement and electrical signals. The first time you respond to a message by writing with your fingers or adjust music volume by turning an invisible nob is going to blow your mind.
I’m someone who dislikes wearing watches all day because they irritate my wrist, especially when I’m writing, but Meta’s comfortable cloth construction feels different.
However, the worst part about needing the Neural Band is that you have to remember to charge it. Battery life is slightly longer than the glasses, but you’ll still need to charge it once per day.
Like most smartwatches, this one uses a bespoke charger that doesn’t work with anything else. That also means that if you lose the charger (like I did), you won’t be able to use your glasses until you find the charger or buy a new one.
Should you buy it?
The short answer is no; most people should not buy these glasses. While they represent a big step up in capability compared to standard Meta AI glasses, there simply aren’t enough reasons for the average person to spend twice the amount of money (or more) on them versus a pair without a display.
I love what Meta built here and think it’s a great template for upcoming smart glasses that will inevitably be lighter, have thinner frames, better battery life, and more functionality. For now, though, these are an amazing tech toy that’s perfect for
