In January this year, Clicks — the company that started by making QWERTY keyboard cases for iPhones — announced it would launch an Android-powered smartphone in Q4 this year. With that window fast approaching, the company has shared more details about the Clicks Communicator and its launch timeline, including some good news.
When Clicks initially announced the Communicator, it said it would have 8GB of RAM. That seemed sufficient since the company was pitching it as a secondary device, and not something that would replace your primary phone. But now, the company says its first smartphone will ship with 12GB of RAM.
Given the DRAM and NAND supply crunch, and how even companies like Apple and Samsung have been forced to raise prices and cut back on memory and storage capacities on their devices. So, Clicks deserves credit for going in the opposite direction.
This is not the first upgrade that Clicks has made to the Communicator since its January announcement. In June this year, it informed preorder customers that the phone would ship with Android 17 out of the box and use a bigger 4,350 mAh battery. That’s up from the 4,000mAh cell initially promised.
Clicks will start shipping the Communicator to customers in December. But before that, starting September 18, preorder holders can pick their color, keyboard layout, charging covers, and accessories.
Clicks has partnered with Dbrand to ensure accessories are available for the Communicator. These include the MNML minimalist case and Prism glass screen protector. Magnets built into the back of the case ensure magnetic wireless charging still works.
The case will retail for $39, while the Prism screen protector will cost $35.
Clicks adds mobile service and damage protection
To make it easy to set up the Communicator as a second phone, Clicks is also announcing Clicks Mobile. It’s an MVNO-like offering that will provide cellular connectivity for the phone through eSIM in the US and UK. Eligible customers will receive two months of free voice and data service. The phone itself also features a nano SIM card slot.
Lastly, Clicks also announced a protection plan: Clicks Care. It will provide accidental damage protection for the Communicator, including against drops, spills, and screen cracks. The two-year plan will cost $129 in the US and Canada, with a $49 deductible.
Clicks Communicator will be available for a special price of $499 through September 30. The MSRP will increase to $649 after that.
