Insta360 will soon let you create 3D scenes out of your videos

Insta360, the brand known for its 360-degree cameras, is about to deliver a new experience for its users. No, the company is not launching new hardware. Rather its a new feature for those with an X6, X5, or X4 Air. This new feature is designed to let you explore your memories in a more immersive way.

Today, Insta360 announced the launch of “Spatial Capture,” which will appear as a new tab in the Insta360 app. Here, you’ll be able to turn your recorded videos into explorable 3D scenes. Better yet, no specialized capture equipment or complex workflows are needed.

The way it works is you record a video, no longer than two minutes, of the space you want to capture. If the video is longer than two minutes, you’ll be able to trim down the recording before processing. From the Insta360 app, you’ll be able to select the footage while on the Spatial Capture tab. After you tap “Generate,” the footage is sent to the cloud, where 3D Gaussian Splatting technology converts your video into a 3D setting. The company warns that processing takes about one to two hours to finish.

While the processing is underway, you’ll be able to close the app and turn your attention to other matters. Once processing is complete, you’ll receive a notification that the scene is ready. You can then explore the scene as you wish, using touch controls, a virtual joystick, or the device’s gyroscope. On top of that, you’ll have the freedom to add effects and create custom camera paths. These scenes can be exported as a video or shared as an interactive link.

Spatial Capture is scheduled to roll out on September 28. As mentioned earlier, support will be available for the X6, X5, and X4 Air. However, the feature will initially only be available in the US. Insta360 adds that users can generate up to four 3DGS scenes for free each month.
