My commute to university is a 45-minute bus ride from one terminal to the next, one long trip.
For most of it, I kept my phone in my pocket because the bus made me nauseous when it steered left or right.
Reading anything on my phone in the same conditions would leave me queasy by the halfway point every time, and I got sick of my sickness.
Ultimately, I would resort to staring out the window for the whole ride or accepting nausea if I had to check the phone for something that required my attention.
Luckily, Android 17 shipped Motion Assist, and it helped make my trips more productive.
The problem was never the phone; it was a mismatch
Your eyes and your inner ear were having a conflict the whole time
Motion sickness on a bus isn’t about looking at the screen, even though it feels that way when it’s happening in the moment.
It happens when your eyes tell your brain you’re sitting still, as if you’re looking at your phone screen, while your inner ear insists you’re moving. That conflict between your senses is what makes you feel sick.
Looking down at your phone makes it worse, since your eyes lock onto something that’s not moving. On the flip side, everything around you is moving.
This lethal combination gets to my head every time, no matter how slowly I read.
A few Android features exist specifically to smooth out friction like this, buried in menus most people never open. Motion Assist is the first one that targeted my problem instead of a general inconvenience.
Motion Assist is Google’s answer to exactly this problem
Small bubbles, tracked by your phone’s motion sensors
The feature adds small bubbles along the edges of the screen that move in real time. It uses data from the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope.
When the bus turns, brakes, or accelerates, the bubbles shift to match, tracking the actual motion instead of just sitting there.
The constant visual motion gives my eyes something that matches what my inner ear feels, which is the entire point.
Google describes the feature as its version of Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues, which does the same basic thing on the iPhone using a similar approach.
It’s a small detail, but it’s the kind of small detail that matters if you’re like me, traveling back and forth from university every day on the bus.
Turning it on took under a minute
No hunting required, after I knew where to look
You can find the settings by going to Settings > Google > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion Assist. If you want to get there fast, search for “motion assist” in settings and that’s all there is to it.
I didn’t run into any confusing menus or renamed sections along the way, which isn’t always a given with newer Android features.
I toggled it on each time I get on the bus, rather than letting it start automatically based on detected movement.
Google has quietly rolled out several small tweaks this year that only matter if you know they exist, and Motion Assist fits that same pattern.
For even faster access, you can also use a Quick Settings tile if you’d rather skip opening the settings menu.
Customizing the bubbles is also part of the mix, since you can set different aspects to match your preferences. You can change the bubbles’ color, size, and shape.
For me, the default setup worked just fine without any color or size adjustments, but you can always choose.
It’s not perfect, and it’s still spreading gradually
A first-gen fix, but headed in the right direction
Motion Assist debuted on Google Pixel phones first, and it’s still expanding to Samsung devices running Android 17. Plenty of phones still don’t have it, even if they can run it.
It also requires Android 17, which rules out a lot of hardware that won’t see that update for a while, if it ever does.
It doesn’t change what the feature did for my bus ride, even if the rollout has different release time frames across different manufacturers.
It’s a fix built for a genuine physical problem, not just another convenience toggle added for the sake of having more settings to tweak.
I would rather have the feature work well on a few devices than work poorly on all of them at once.

Forty-five minutes used to mean choosing between boredom and nausea, with no real middle ground on most days.
Now I can look at my phone, reply to messages, read the news my work requires, and get something done instead of staring out the window.
Android’s accessibility menu has quietly become one of the most useful places to check for this kind of fix.
Motion Assist is the first feature from that menu that has changed something I deal with every day, not just an occasional annoyance.
