Telxius plugs in 800G coherent optical tech to boost network capacity

In response to what it says is growing customer demand for scalable, high-capacity connectivity across key international network corridors – in particular Europe, the US and Latin America – connectivity provider Telxius has installed 800G coherent pluggable optics across its terrestrial transport networks.

In addition to supporting the continual evolution of its network in response to users, Telxius believes the deployment of the technology from Nokia will enable it to reduce power consumption, optimise space utilisation and lower the cost of network expansion.

The Telxius network currently spans more than 100,000km of high-capacity subsea cable systems and terrestrial fibre across Europe and the Americas, connecting datacentres and digital hubs.

Through an integrated network of subsea infrastructure, terrestrial backhaul, and landing gateways and edge datacentres, Telxius offers businesses the ability to interconnect their infrastructure and scale operations using a Tier 1 IP network which is claimed to provide direct global reach, enabling routing and full control over traffic paths.

Industries supported by the company include a range of use cases from enterprise and cloud connectivity to large-scale network interconnection and data transport, with services encompassing network and transport, infrastructure, internet and cloud, interconnection, security and CDN.

Assessing the network’s current pressure points, Telxius identified cloud services, artificial intelligence (AI) workloads and datacentre interconnection as driving rapid traffic growth across global networks.

To that end, Telxius has applied Nokia’s ICE-X 800G ZR/ZR+ coherent pluggable technology to add capacity across its existing terrestrial infrastructure with IP-over-DWDM networking, while reducing the power and space required for network expansion. This increases network efficiency and simplifies operations to deliver resilient, high-performance connectivity for customers.

Telxius is also using Nokia network automation for greater visibility and control across its optical transport network. This is designed to provide full fault and performance monitoring and coordinated service provisioning so it can support faster operations and offer customers more predictable service quality.

This deployment builds on Nokia and Telxius’s recent demonstration of ICE-X 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optics over the Brusa subsea cable system. The trial delivered 400Gbps per wavelength over a distance of more than 5,600km, demonstrating the technology’s ability to support ultra-long-haul subsea infrastructure, as well as terrestrial networks.

According to the provider’s chief technology and information officer, Jesús María Rubio, the project, together with the successful subsea trial on Brusa, reinforces Telxius’s “position at the forefront of optical innovation”.

“At Telxius, we are continuously upgrading our international network to deliver the high-capacity, resilient and energy-efficient connectivity our customers need across the world’s main digital corridors,” he said. “It underlines our commitment to adopting advanced technologies early, especially when they bring clear benefits to our customers and our global network.”

Nokia senior vice-president and general manager of optical networks Ron Johnson said: “As AI workloads drive unprecedented growth in traffic between hyperscale datacentres and global network hubs, operators need transport solutions that combine scalability, efficiency and operational simplicity. Telxius can efficiently expand capacity across its terrestrial infrastructure, creating a high-performance foundation for datacentre interconnection and seamless connectivity between terrestrial and subsea networks.”
