Affordable Android-based gaming handhelds have been gaining in popularity lately, and they come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. A handful have two screens, making them ideal for emulating games that originally appeared on the dual-screen Nintendo DS. This week, the developer of the DS-themed Nitrodeck Launcher announced that an update to make the launcher compatible with these dual-screen devices is coming soon.
As brought to our attention by Retrododo, developer Mr. Rubik has been showing off an update for Nitrodeck Launcher that makes it compatible with Android handhelds that come with two screens. He’s also published a video showing the launcher running on the Anbernic RG DS handheld, and the software certainly looks the part.
Up to now, Nitrodeck has been primarily a novelty launcher for Android phones. Updating the launcher to run across two screens makes perfect sense, given its inspiration. It looks like the launcher runs smoothly on the RG DS, and it even includes the Nintendo DS’s start-up screen.
Developer Mr. Rubik says the update is ready and should be available on the Play Store sometime in the next week or so.
As shown in the video above, the project does seem to use Nintendo’s assets. Nintendo is infamously litigious when it comes to fan projects appropriating its IP; it remains to be seen whether this update will draw any unwanted legal attention. Nintendo hasn’t shut down products like the Anbernic RG DS itself, so it’s possible Nitrodeck’s dual-screen update will fly under the radar, as well.
