Private 4G/5G network takes off at Ontario International Airport

Southern California’s Ontario International Airport (ONT) has selected Boldyn Networks to design, build and operate a high-performance private wireless network.

Recently ranked by JD Power as the second most popular medium-sized airport in North America, ONT is Southern California’s fastest-growing airport over the past 10 years. The airport began life in 2023 as a small airstrip. It has since grown into an international airport with two terminals and one of the longest runways in Southern California – 26R/8L running at 12,200 feet – serving 18.7 million residents in its home region.

ONT is owned and operated by the Ontario International Airport Authority, a joint powers agreement between the City of Ontario and San Bernardino County. It has seen annual passenger volumes surpass seven million per year and offers nonstop service to two dozen major airports in the US, Mexico, Central America and Taiwan. At the end of 2025, the airport saw more than 90 daily departures and handled 835,129 tons of cargo in that year.

The new strategic deployment and investment in digital infrastructure is designed to provide the airport with a dedicated, secure private wireless network that offers greater visibility and resiliency than public networks. By utilising a segmented architecture, dedicated spectrum and enterprise-level controls, the airport believes that it is establishing a foundation for mission-critical applications that will scale alongside its rapid passenger and cargo growth.

ONT has a long-term commitment to align its digital evolution with its operational future, ensuring the airport remains a leader in both passenger experience and cargo efficiency. While initial phases focus on enhancing physical security and real-time situational awareness, the private wireless network is also designed to be “future-ready” without foundational rework.

“Investing in a private wireless network gives Ontario International Airport the operational autonomy necessary to manage and secure our more than 1,700-acre footprint with precision,” said Chuck Miwa, senior vice-president and chief information officer for the Ontario International Airport Authority. “Modernising our communication infrastructure ensures that as our passenger volumes continue to climb, our ability to monitor, respond and manage airfield security remains ahead of the curve, providing a seamless and secure environment for our passengers and tenants.”

Initially supporting physical security and perimeter intrusion detection, and expanding to advanced camera coverage across the site, the Boldyn mobile private network will combine 4G/5G access, on-premise edge compute and centralised private cloud management. Boldyn’s 24/7 network operations centre (NOC) and security operations centre (SOC) will also be installed as part of a demand to deliver reliable performance for the airport’s most critical security operations.

“We’re applying our experience from supporting passenger journeys at some of the world’s largest transit hubs to design a network that can handle the complex, high‑interference environment of a major US cargo hub,” remarked Jason Caliento, chief commercial officer, US, for Boldyn Networks.

“By managing this network through our dedicated NOC and SOC, we are delivering a scalable platform that supports immediate security requirements while providing the bandwidth and low latency required for the airport’s long-term innovation roadmap.”
