Seth Meyers takes ‘A Closer Look’ at Trump’s ballroom tour for Xi Jinping

Donald Trump‘s two-day White House hosting of Chinese president Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan has dominated headlines and late night shows this week, and Seth Meyers took “A Closer Look.”

During Monday night’s Late Night, the host used his deep dive segment to examine the presidential visit — namely a state dinner at the White House, during which Trump invited attendees “through that beautiful curtain in the back” for a peek at the construction site that is Trump’s controversial $400 million ballroom.

“First of all, if someone invites you to go ‘through that beautiful curtain in the back,’ you need to get the out of there,” said Meyers. “It’s like the first scene in a horror movie that takes place in an antique store. Did you say you were looking for Hummel figurines? I believe I have some through the beautiful curtain in the back. Before we go, let me ask: Does anyone know you are here?”

Notably, Trump previously told reporters the ballroom will sit atop an underground military complex “because of a stupid lawsuit that was filed,” referring to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s seek to pause construction of the White House ballroom (U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon ruled construction of the ballroom must stop until the project is authorised by Congress, but work can continue for “the safety, security, and structural integrity of the White House.”)

“Isn’t this ballroom of yours supposed to include a bunch of top secret military facilities, and if it does, maybe don’t do the tour with the heads of foreign governments?” said Meyers on Late Night. “Must be so easy to be a spy these days: This is Falcon. I’m on the premises, and I have eyes on the ballroom door. As planned, I will create a distraction, and then wait…hold up…sounds like he might just be giving us a tour.“
