QSSR AI Upscaling Comes to Standard PS5

Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for standard PS5 consoles on Thursday, October 1, bringing an AI-upscaling option to Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both games are being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option, extending a Pro-style image-quality feature to standard PS5 players.

How QSSR differs from PS5 Pro’s PSSR

In its PlayStation announcement, Sony describes PSSR as a technology that analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches. The company says PSSR’s computational demands had previously made bringing that experience to standard PS5 impossible.

QSSR is a new, faster performance tier of AI upscaling, built with a streamlined neural network architecture and an implementation tuned to maximize performance on PS5. Sony says the technology came from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, while QSSR is designed to improve image detail and stability on the standard console.

That distinction adds another dimension to the PS5 and PS5 Pro hardware divide: QSSR brings AI-guided reconstruction to standard PS5, but Sony positions PSSR as the higher-tier option on Pro. The announcement does not specify output resolutions or hardware requirements beyond QSSR’s design for PS5.

Developers describe the image-quality gains

Insomniac Games says QSSR brings extra clarity and stability to the environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to the game’s environments, including Madripoor and Shinjuku.

Sucker Punch Productions also says QSSR resolves fine details in characters and environments, with temporal stability that had not previously been possible on PS5. Those are developer assessments; the announcement does not quantify the visual gains or promise a performance increase.

More games could add QSSR

Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers and that it hopes to see the improvements in many more titles. For now, Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the confirmed first games, with QSSR available as an additional graphics option through their patches.
