I’ve restarted my Pixel 10 Pro three times this month; Google still won’t fix it

My first Google Pixel phone was the Pixel 2 XL, which I held onto for a few years until I upgraded to the Pixel 6. Since then, I’ve owned the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8, and I now use a Pixel 10 Pro as my daily driver.

The Pixel 10 Pro is my favorite Pixel (though I think the Pixel 10a is the better device), but after a year of using it, I’m sick of running into the same problem. It doesn’t matter how many updates Google pushes; the Pixel experience is a buggy mess.

I stopped waiting for Google’s ecosystem to get better; I started mixing brands instead

I regularly encounter crippling bugs on my Pixel phone

The only fix is a restart

When you swipe up to open the app drawer on the Pixel Launcher, the launcher applies a blur effect to the home screen that intensifies until the app drawer is fully open.

It’s a neat transition effect that I wouldn’t think about unless it stopped breaking my phone.

Occasionally, after I close the app drawer, the blur effect remains. It makes my phone’s screen unreadable, and it disables all touch controls.

The only fix is to restart my phone. While I accept that every phone crashes once in a while, this bug happens approximately once a month.

Another bug happens when I lock or unlock my phone rapidly. Sometimes I’ll lock my phone, instantly remember something I meant to do, then unlock it. The phone sometimes takes this action as an instruction to turn the screen black.

The fix for that is, again, to restart the phone.

These are the most common phone-breaking bugs I encounter, but I’ve also seen others, including:

  • My Pixel suddenly restarts with no prompting.
  • The Pixel Launcher crashes and instructs me to wait or close the app (both options require a restart).
  • The phone becomes unresponsive (this requires me to wait a few minutes before I can restart the phone).

In a year of using any phone, I’ve encountered similar bugs. The problem is their frequency. I have to restart my Pixel at least once a month; this month I had to do it three times.

I’ve tried every fix in the book, from factory resetting to uninstalling potentially problematic apps. Nothing works.

There’s always something wrong with Pixel phones

Pixel updates mean new battery drain issues

In April this year, Pixel users started reporting unusual battery drain, Android Auto connection issues, and the inability to call 911. Pixel 8 Pro users also reported significant Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection issues.

Eventually, Google fixed these bugs. But it’s the same cycle Pixel owners go through every year. Even if the phone-breaking bugs I described earlier never happened, I wouldn’t describe the Pixel experience as stable.

It’s a shame, as the frequency of Pixel updates means we get new Android features before anyone else. Owning a Pixel phone feels like being on the cutting edge of Android features; it’s the primary reason I use one.

However, the rapid frequency of Pixel updates may be the problem.

Wait for the fixes to go live

Browse Reddit or Google’s help forums after a quarterly Feature Drop, and you’ll see the same story each time: users complaining about new bugs.

Updates carry bugs like 18th-century sailing ships carried rats; you can’t eradicate all of them.

However, Google should have cottoned on to the fact that nearly every update it pushes negatively impacts battery life. Other issues crop up regularly, but battery life is the recurring issue that plagues Pixel software updates.

If Google controls the hardware and the software, why can’t it push more stable updates?

I would prefer fewer, more stable updates

Have Feature Drops outlived their usefulness?

The quarterly Feature Drops are fun, but they’ve become lackluster in recent years. The most significant part of any update is improvements to the UI and expanded functionality, not new features.

While these changes are welcome, I don’t think we need them every quarter. A single update between major Android updates would have a bigger impact and would hopefully give Google more time to fix recurring bugs.

The kicker is that Google eventually fixes these issues. It’s why I don’t install the quarterly Feature Drops unless there’s a specific feature I want to test. If I wait a month, there’s a good chance that Google squashed the biggest bugs.

I don’t think anyone would be seriously unhappy if Google extended the time between updates and used it to create a more stable release.

Stability is taking the backseat, and it’s affecting the entire Pixel experience

When my Pixel 10 Pro works, it works brilliantly. I love what Google has done with Material 3 Expressive, and the commitment to avoiding bloat is what stops me from switching to a Samsung Galaxy phone.

But my Pixel phone doesn’t work reliably. Stability should be Google’s priority right now, not whatever invasive AI tool it dreamt up last.
