Is your phone not charging? Try this simple fix before paying for a repair

I don’t seem to have much luck with USB-C, and the tech gods have been especially unforgiving lately, with both my smartphone and tablet recently refusing to charge properly with the little omnidirectional connector.

With my phone in particular, a USB-C cable just wouldn’t sit right in the port anymore. It always ended up at an odd angle and would fall out after a little while, making charging a real nightmare. I could still charge my phone with some older USB-A to USB-C cables, so I knew it still worked, but fast-charging was just out of the question. You might have experienced something similar, either with the newer USB-C connector or back in the old days of microUSB-powered gadgets.

Off-angle and loose-fitting cables might be the result of trapped grime.

Have you ever had a broken USB-C port?

In either case, the stages of helplessness are often the same. First, the device still charges, but perhaps only with its favorite cables, or only after jamming the wired in a few times to kick-start the process. Next, you start wrangling the cable, holding it at specific angles and propping it up just right so that it works. But eventually, you end up with a dead device or relying on wireless charging to slowly top yourself back up, and dreading the seemingly inevitable repair bill.

But it needn’t be this way. I managed to bring both my phone and tablet back from the edge of the abyss with just a little USB-C spring cleaning.

How I clean a USB-C port

The problem with USB-C ports is that they’re reasonably compact spaces destined to be harbingers of dust and dirt. A little piece of lint from your pocket can easily find its way in, never to be seen again.

Much like why you should never clean your ear with a Q-tip, repeatedly plugging in a USB-C cable can compact this muck and grime over time, making it hard enough to eventually block the USB-C cable’s tiny pins from lining up correctly. The remedy is to very carefully extract the buildup and restore the port to as-new condition.

I certainly wouldn’t recommend using liquids or chemicals on a sensitive electronic device. A fine-tipped brush can be a good option for removing lighter debris, but if there’s enough muck to prevent a cable from fitting securely, you’ll need something more heavy-duty. My preferred option is to use fine-tipped tweezers to carefully but firmly root around the port. I had lots of success with angled tweezers that make it a bit easier to work around the USB-C pin connector inside.

Power off and a cautious hand are required.

A word of caution before you start: make sure to turn your device off if you’re using metal tweezers, that way you won’t accidentally short any pins.

Next, grab a light source and take the best look you can at the back of the USB-C port. If you see muck or grime in there, try to remove it with a simple pinch of the tweezers. You’d be surprised by how many small clumps of dust you can pull out with very little effort. If it’s stubborn, you can gently scrape along the back of the housing to try to dislodge it. However, never scrape the tweezers directly over the face of the USB-C pin connector, or you risk damaging it, and then a cable will never connect to it again!

Once it’s looking pretty clear, grab your USB-C cable and try plugging it in. If it’s still inserting at an off-angle or not fitting snugly, there’s probably still some grime packed in at the very back of the housing you need to get rid of.

If it charges up, congratulations, you’ve just saved yourself an expensive trip to the repair store.

Preventative care

If using metal tweezers makes you nervous, non-conductive alternatives like a wooden or plastic toothpick can be a safer choice. They are far less likely to short-circuit any internal components or scratch the electrical contacts inside the port. However, just be extra cautious not to apply too much force, which might cause a toothpick or similar object to break off inside the port.

To prevent debris from accumulating in the first place, avoid placing your device directly into bags containing loose dirt and lint. Using soft silicone anti-dust plugs is another cheap and effective way to seal off the USB-C port whenever you aren’t actively charging. You can pick up a handful of them for all your devices for just a few dollars from major online stores, and they often come with small cleaning brushes to help keep your ports clear of debris.

Cleaning your USB-C port isn’t a guaranteed fix for charging woes. But if you’ve noticed your cable isn’t quite fitting in as well as it used to, and haven’t dropped or bent your phone’s USB-C housing, there’s a good chance that a spring clean could be just what your phone needs.
