Add Android Authority on Google:

TL;DR

  • Android Auto users are reporting an issue with Gemini.
  • When asking a question or performing a search, the AI assistant will think for several seconds before giving up.
  • It’s said that resetting Android Auto settings, updating the phone, and other troubleshooting steps don’t work.

Update: October 2, 2026 (2:40 PM ET): A Google spokesperson has informed Android Authority that a fix for this issue was rolled out this week. If you are still experiencing this problem, check to see if an update is available.

Original article: October 2, 2026 (10:37 AM ET): Another day, another bug breaking functions on Android Auto. Just this week, we reported on an issue preventing users from making calls while their flip phones are closed. While users have grown accustomed to the never-ending game of whack-a-mole, it’s still frustrating when the system doesn’t work as expected. This time, the issue is related to performing searches with Gemini.

Google’s AI assistant is capable of many things, like hands-free calling, summarizing emails, and creating customized playlists. However, answering questions and providing search results are Gemini’s bread and butter. At least that used to be the case, as a glitch appears to have broken this ability on Android Auto for some users.

Reports on Reddit say that Gemini is giving up on searches. In the video above, we see an example of what these users are experiencing. When asking Gemini a question, the assistant gets stuck as it’s processing the question. After around 10 seconds, the AI quits and brings the task to an end.

According to the reports, no troubleshooting steps, like resetting the vehicle’s Android Auto settings or updating the phone, seem to fix the problem. The issue has been spotted on a range of Google, Samsung, and Motorola devices.

We have reached out to Google for comment. This article will be updated when new information becomes available. If you are also experiencing this bug, tell us in the comments section below.
