Claude adds Google Workspace integration to take on Gemini

Using Claude alongside Google Docs has always meant too much jumping back and forth. You ask Claude to rewrite a paragraph, copy the result into your document, fix the formatting if something breaks, and then repeat the whole process the next time you need help. That extra friction is now starting to disappear.

Anthropic is bringing Claude directly into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides through a new Google Workspace add-on, which is now available in beta for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users.

And this goes well beyond asking Claude questions about what’s on screen — it can actually edit the file for you. In Google Docs, you could highlight a paragraph and ask Claude to shorten it, clean up the wording, or change the tone. The edit happens directly in the document, so you don’t have to copy text back and forth just to fix a few lines.

Sheets could be even more useful. Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables, create charts, clean up data, and add new tabs. So if someone drops a messy spreadsheet in your inbox and asks for a breakdown of quarterly sales, you may not have to spend the next 10 minutes figuring out the right formula or hunting through menus. You can just explain what you want and let Claude handle the setup.

Anthropic is also giving you control over how freely Claude can make changes. The default “Ask before edits” mode shows an approval card before applying an edit, while “Accept all edits” lets Claude work through a task without stopping for confirmation each time.

There’s another side to the rollout. Anthropic is launching Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors for Claude, which means you can start the job from Claude instead of from Workspace. For example, you could paste a Google Sheets link into Claude and ask it to reorganize the data, or ask Claude to create a new presentation from a collection of notes. On supported setups, the file can open alongside the Claude conversation, so the whole workflow stays in one place.

That’s what makes this more interesting than a basic Workspace add-on. Claude is starting to blur the line between asking an AI for help and actually getting the work done inside the file you need.

There’s also obvious competition here. Google already has Gemini built deeply into Docs, Sheets, and Slides, so Workspace is very much Google’s home turf. Claude getting direct editing access gives people another serious option without forcing them to leave the Google apps they already use every day. So, for anyone who prefers Claude but still lives inside Google Workspace, this could be a useful upgrade.
