Final Fantasy VII Revelation Demo Preview

October 10, 2026

A new hands-on demo of Final Fantasy VII Revelation trades the Highwind’s open-world scale for a linear North Crater sequence, showing that the remake trilogy’s finale still has room for tightly directed story sections.

In its October 9 preview, IGN’s Jacqueline Thomas described earlier hands-on sessions focused on exploring the open world by airship. Her New York Comic Con demo instead began early in Chapter 1, with the party arriving at the North Crater and following a path toward its center.

The North Crater slice puts story and systems up front

The route felt more like a late-game dungeon than an open-world tour, with crystalline scenery giving way to encounters and a boss fight. Before setting off, Thomas found a new way to develop Materia: fragments can add an AP ratio, and the demo’s 200 fragments raised Fire Materia by about a third of a level.

The Item Transmuter also returns from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, while auto-loot was enabled by default in the demo. That meant Thomas could collect crafting materials while moving through the level instead of repeatedly pressing a button to pick them up.

The demo’s party was Cloud, Cid, and Vincent. Cid’s attacks included a timing mechanic: after standard strikes, a blue mist signaled when to attack again for a stronger hit. Combat seemed forgiving, with enemies often defeated by basic attacks or a handful of ATB abilities.

Cloud had the Summoner FITS job, which let him call Ifrit, Shiva, or Titan for one ATB segment. Summon Synergy attacks required abilities to fill a bar, but enemies often fell before Thomas could use them. The path introduced Sephiroth clones, fused monsters, and Gigas before ending with Jenova Deathmourner.

A dramatic boss fight, but early difficulty may change

Jenova Deathmourner’s three-phase fight brought fire-breathing tentacles and gave Thomas time to use multiple Synergy attacks. The encounter closed the demo, which left her wanting a tougher challenge; she also cautioned that this was the first chapter and that combat balance could still change before release.

The preview’s broader takeaway is that Revelation’s open-world activities will not be the whole experience: its linear story sequences remain dramatic, as in the first two games. That is an observation from one early slice, not a complete picture of how the finished game will pace its different sections.

The finale may expand familiar story material

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the concluding chapter of the remake trilogy and was described in the IGN preview as roughly six months from release, with launch expected in April. Thomas also suggested that material she felt was rushed in the original PlayStation game could receive more room in this finale, though that remains her expectation rather than a confirmed detail.

Because the demo covered only an early Chapter 1 section, its forgiving combat does not establish the difficulty of the full game. The next meaningful test will be how Revelation brings its large world and its directed story sequences together across the complete adventure.
