Epic Games has indefinitely delayed its unannounced Marvel and Star Wars shooter, which had been slated for March 2027, as the team shifts to an AI-first development process. PC Gamer and IGN both report that developers were instructed to adopt the new approach, citing Bloomberg’s reporting.
Epic is shifting the shooter to AI-first development
The reported instructions cover both code and artwork. Developers are to use tools such as Anthropic’s Claude, with the project’s art planned around an end-to-end AI workflow. Staff were reportedly advised of the change during the week before PC Gamer’s report, published October 12.
The project’s production change sits within a broader AI push at Epic. CEO Tim Sweeney described a company-wide effort to reorganize developers around AI acceleration, saying its aim was to help teams produce more and better work, rather than simply do the same work with fewer people.
Sweeney also outlined varying efficiency gains across development areas: he cited 20% in some technical Unreal Engine work and up to five times in web development. He expects few areas to remain below three times January 2026 efficiency by the end of the following year, according to PC Gamer’s account of his posts.
The schedule and game details remain unclear
Sweeney’s view is that AI can shorten the path from an idea to a playable test, potentially giving teams more opportunities to try game systems during development. The creative implications of AI in games are also part of a wider conversation, including in discussions around AI, choice, and creativity in Death Stranding 2.
For now, Epic has not publicly announced the shooter or provided a replacement release window. The available reporting identifies it as a Marvel and Star Wars crossover, but offers no confirmed platforms or detailed gameplay information. Its premise puts two major franchises in the same project, while the development pivot leaves its eventual shape and timing open.
Marvel’s wider game slate continues to take shape elsewhere, including the announced Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls DLC roadmap. For Epic’s shooter, the next meaningful update will need to come from the company: there is currently no new date for players to plan around.
