YouTube Music will now flag AI-generated songs for listeners

AI-generated content has been circulating for years, making it hard to tell what’s what. And while the visuals might give it away in a video, it’s a little harder to detect if you’re just using your ears. For this reason, YouTube Music is rolling out a clear way for listeners to distinguish AI-generated music. Going forward, an AI marker will appear under the song title for AI-generated content.

This is a must

Now, it’s going to be interesting to see just how this label works, because YouTube is going to be using its own detection tools and “teaming up with music partners” in order to label these songs. YouTube also shares that this label will apply to songs “where AI played a significant role.”

For the most part, this is something that all listeners can appreciate. In a world where AI is getting so good, it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s not. YouTube shares that the “goal is to make it as easy as possible for viewers and listeners to have the right information and clarity when it comes to the music they listen to.”

We’ve seen this before

This isn’t the first time YouTube is making this kind of change. We saw the brand introduce this type of labeling back in May 2026 on YouTube. While YouTube already had AI disclosures, it decided to make them more prominent, moving the AI-generated label directly below the video player and above the description.

There’s a pretty good chance you’ve seen these on YouTube, most times appearing directly under the video title. This same label is also used on YouTube Shorts. It clearly indicates what to expect. Spotify also has labels for AI artists, and there are also third-party tools to help you filter out unwanted AI content as well.

However, I don’t really think it’s enough to be honest. Personally, I’d love the option to just remove AI-generated videos from my feed. This should be an option available on all platforms. Of course, with this kind of all-or-nothing approach, you run the risk of videos with minor AI enhancements getting screened out.

On the other hand, if more videos are filtered, creators may rely less on AI technology, so their videos can be seen in this situation. Naturally, this is just one opinion on the matter.

More and more

AI has introduced a wealth of powerful tools and services since its mainstream launch. Because of this, we’ve seen the world change, with new creators emerging out of nowhere and people creating apps with no prior knowledge.

Of course, it has also introduced a wealth of new problems too. But with so many companies investing in it, we’ll keep seeing more AI in our everyday lives. Google probably has the most reach, introducing AI elements into its already popular products.

The real question is how far things will go before companies start pulling things back. No one really has the answer to this because the worst is probably yet to come.

No matter where it goes, it’s important that companies create clear distinctions between what’s being made by AI and what’s not.
