Alliance Arts has canceled the public Steam demo for Drunken Goddess Reflux, planned for October 19, and will instead offer closed online sessions to a limited number of players. The studio cited concerns about enforcing gameplay-sharing restrictions and the risk of AI-assisted copycats appearing before launch, as reported by PC Gamer and GameSpot.
Why Alliance Arts pulled the public demo
The original plan was to let players try the game publicly on Steam, with limits on posting and streaming gameplay videos. Alliance Arts said those restrictions would be difficult for its team to manage properly, so the public release is no longer going ahead.
There is a second concern: the studio believes the demo could give people enough material to quickly imitate the game’s presentation and gameplay using AI or other tools, then release those copies before the original game launches. The replacement is a series of closed online play sessions for a limited group, rather than an unrestricted demo.
A wider concern for indie developers
Copycat games are not a new problem, but PC Gamer noted that developers have increasingly raised concerns about how quickly projects can be reproduced. Its report referenced a developer whose prototype was reportedly cloned within five hours, as well as examples shared on Bluesky by McPixel developer Sos Sosowski.
That worry also reaches beyond demos: AI-generated games and intellectual-property concerns have become part of a broader conversation about what happens when a game’s ideas and presentation are easy to imitate.
What players can expect
Drunken Goddess Reflux is a horror drinking game built around shot-glass Russian roulette, with players facing an anime demon girl. Its rules grow stranger as the drinking continues, and the goal involves getting the opponent drunk enough to vomit up her soul.
Alliance Arts has not provided a date or sign-up details for the closed sessions, and the announcement does not confirm a later public demo. For now, players who expected to try the game on Steam on October 19 will have to wait for the studio to share how it will select participants.
