PS5 dollar sales rose 43% year over year in September while Xbox fell to its lowest September on record, Circana data shows. Analyst Mat Piscatella published the September 2026 US market highlights on October 22.
The tracking period covers August 30 through October 3, and Marvel’s Wolverine launched on September 15, exactly halfway through it. Insomniac Games’ PS5 exclusive finished as the month’s top-selling game on full-game dollar sales, combining digital and retail, even as the console gains around it came with a hedge: Piscatella’s own framing says the game “helped” PlayStation, not that it caused the surge, and PS5’s higher price than a year ago also lifts the dollar figure.
PS5 led the console market in both dollar sales and units sold, with unit sales up 22% year over year. Switch 2 unit sales fell 14%, and Xbox unit sales dropped 27%, sinking to their lowest ever for a September and taking that record from September 2025.
Accessories followed the game
Piscatella also said in his BlueSky post that the Marvel’s Wolverine limited edition DualSense controller was September’s best-selling accessory in both units and dollars. On the PlayStation Store, Wolverine was September’s number one game in North America and number two in Europe, behind EA Sports FC 27.
Sony also posted September’s top PS Store downloads on the PlayStation Blog, which matches the chart picture. Readers tracking PlayStation hardware’s direction will find September one more month of widening separation between the two consoles.
