Long-time Pixel users reveal why they’re still loyal to Google

Add Android Authority on Google:

TL;DR

  • Long-time Pixel users say clean Android, timely updates, and seamless Google services are among the biggest reasons they keep choosing Google’s phones.
  • Features such as Call Screen, spam filtering, voice typing, and the camera experience make switching to an iPhone or Samsung phone less appealing.
  • However, complaints about Gemini replacing familiar Assistant features, camera processing, battery life, and hardware value suggest Google’s loyal fan base isn’t entirely happy.

Google’s Pixel phones have plenty of competition in the market, but some users have stuck with the brand for years, spanning multiple generations. This has sparked a discussion on Reddit’s r/GooglePixel community, where long-term Pixel users are now weighing in on why they haven’t switched to another phone brand, and the responses reveal a mix of strengths as well as growing frustrations.

Pixel users, what’s the biggest reason you’re sticking with Google’s phones?

One of the most common reasons long-term Pixel users stick with it is its clean, relatively uncluttered software experience. Several commenters compared Google’s interface with Samsung’s One UI, complaining that they don’t prefer the latter because of duplicate apps, bloatware, and unnecessary customization.

“As bloat-free as it gets for Android,” one user wrote, while another said they wouldn’t move to Samsung because of its bloatware.

Long-term reliability also matters. One owner called the Pixel 2 XL the best phone they had ever used for reliability and longevity, adding that it “lasted me years.” Another said their Pixel 7 still didn’t feel dated enough to justify an upgrade.

Google’s software features are another big reason users find it difficult to switch. Call Screen, Scam Detection, voice typing, and Gboard received particular praise from users who’ve held Pixel phones for years.

“Pixel’s Call Screen is also just on another level that no phone has matched yet,” one commenter said, explaining that these features have kept them from switching to an iPhone.

Obviously, the camera remains a major selling point, too, particularly for point-and-shoot photography. However, not everyone is satisfied. One user summed up the growing frustration, saying, “Came for the camera, stayed for the camera, now considering leaving for the camera…”

Others complained about perceived stagnation, AI-driven image processing, and video recording that doesn’t match the competition.

“People want better hardware, not more Gemini slop,” one user complained. Others reported problems with voice commands in Android Auto and frustration with familiar Assistant-era functions.

Hardware remains a point of contention, too. Some Pixel owners say Tensor performance is perfectly adequate for everyday tasks, while others cite overheating, battery life, and pricing as reasons to consider alternatives.

“The lack of on par hardware to compete as a flagship has been disappointing year after year since they decide to go with their own Tensor chip,” one user noted.

Ultimately, Pixel loyalty appears to stem less from the phones’ raw specs and more from the overall experience. But as Google’s software evolves, the company may have to work harder to ensure its AI ambitions don’t undermine the simplicity that brought many users to Pixel in the first place.
