GTA 6 will let its two leads turn up their noses, literally. An Edge magazine feature published October 29 says Rockstar Games built a smell reaction system into Grand Theft Auto VI, one that started as a scripted gag for a single location and grew into something players will run into all over the state of Leonida.
Per the Edge feature, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, developers first made a character react to a bad smell for one specific piece of explorable content. Rather than leave it there, they went back and fleshed the reaction out into a broader system that triggers varying degrees of face-scrunching from protagonists Lucia and Jason at multiple locations around the map.
In a demo Rockstar gave Edge, Jason walked into a filthy house and began grimacing and recoiling without the moment being set up as part of a deliberately crafted encounter. The reaction simply fired, which is the point of a system rather than a scripted scene.
The detail lands in a familiar lineage. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped with temperature-sensitive horse testicles that dynamically expand and contract with the weather, the most infamous example of Rockstar’s appetite for building deep systems with marginal immersion payoff. The smell reactions are the newest entry on that list, and Rockstar has not issued a first-party statement confirming them; everything in this round of coverage traces back to the Edge magazine feature, accessed second-hand through GamesRadar.
Buses you can actually sit down on
The same feature carries a genuine series first: GTA 6 will have a fully functional public transport system, buses and rail that players can ride as passengers on memorized, scheduled routes. Rockstar’s head of development Phil Hooker told Edge he is personally dedicated to the feature.
“I’m obsessed with making sure they always turn up. So, anywhere in the middle of playing, I’ll just go: right, we’re going to get the bus to where we’re going. I’ve memorised all of the routes,” Hooker said in the Edge interview.
Edge reports that riding public transport as a commute means players avoid worrying about their vehicle’s fuel and damage levels. Previous GTA iterations were far more limited: buses could be hijacked but could not carry the player as a passenger, and the train in GTA 5 was a never-ending automated shuttle.
A summary of the Edge feature that circulated on October 29 adds that some GTA 6 story missions require earning money before progressing, meaning the main story cannot be straight-speedran, and that money can come from robbing stores and jewellery shops or stealing cars. Those progression details come only from that community summary of the feature and have not been restated by the outlets covering it.
GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026.
