Far EasTone, Elveo Mobile expand D2D satellite comms

Far EasTone (FET) has announced a partnership with Elveo Mobile to expand its presence across emerging satellite technologies and services, boosting satellite communications capabilities across the Southeast Asia region.

FET, one of the leading telecommunications and digital service providers in Taiwan, believes the next generation of communications will be driven by the integration of terrestrial and satellite networks. It sees the partnership with mobile direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity firm Elveo Mobile as complementing its broader satellite communications capabilities, which span satellite broadband and D2D connectivity.

By extending connectivity beyond traditional geographical boundaries, FET aims to strengthen Taiwan’s digital resilience and help shape a more connected, future-ready digital society.

At the heart of the deal is the expectation of FET that satellite broadband technologies will provide high-speed connectivity for remote areas, specialised environments and mission-critical applications. It regards D2D satellite services as having the potential to enable standard mobile devices to maintain basic communications in areas where terrestrial mobile coverage is limited.

Moreover, it says that as D2D technologies evolve and strengthen, terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks will move past complementarity toward fundamental integration, which will unlock improved capabilities, better economics, and the seamless support of new and innovative applications.

Through investments across multiple satellite technologies, FET says it is steadily progressing towards a multi-layer communications architecture that integrates terrestrial mobile networks, satellite broadband and D2D satellite services, expanding both network coverage and service reach.

“FET continues to expand its satellite capabilities, from satellite broadband to D2D connectivity, while integrating them with our mobile network,” said FET president Chee Ching. “Our collaboration with Elveo Mobile marks an important milestone in advancing D2D satellite services, and strengthening network resilience and coverage toward always-on, seamless connectivity.”

Going forward, FET believes that by progressively integrating network resources across land, air and space, it can develop a more resilient, expansive and scalable converged network architecture. Using its existing mobile network and digital service capabilities, it will continue exploring applications spanning consumer services, enterprise solutions, public services and mission-critical communications.

FET added that, as demand for uninterrupted connectivity continues to grow, the company will further integrate terrestrial and satellite communications to extend coverage beyond geographical boundaries, enable new applications for consumers, enterprises and public services, and strengthen Taiwan’s overall communications resilience. Collaborations with international partners such as Elveo Mobile are seen as key as it looks to execute its satellite communications strategy, gradually expanding its portfolio of satellite technologies and service capabilities.

“Elveo Mobile is building a network that combines satellite assets, global spectrum resources and a worldwide ecosystem of more than 50 mobile network partners,” said Elveo Mobile CEO Ramu Potarazu. “Far EasTone shares our commitment to collaborative innovation and digital resilience.

“Together, we will advance the development of direct-to-device satellite services enabling reliable, next-generation connectivity for Far EasTone’s customers and the Taiwan market. This partnership is a strategic step in strengthening communications resilience for the region and bringing seamless connectivity to more places, devices and applications.”
