For the last few months, Google has regularly rolled out biweekly updates for Gemini for Home and Google Home. You’d expect the changelog to get shorter by now, but the latest release notes are the most exhaustive yet. More importantly, Google is rolling out a bunch of improvements for its Nest and Google Home speakers, which improve streaming performance and deliver smoother audio playback.
Google’s latest round of Gemini for Home improvements makes everyday voice commands more reliable. The assistant should now better understand your request to move music between rooms. You should get fewer “Sorry, I did not understand” responses, which in some cases triggered even when you did not speak to the device.
The YouTube TV experience on smart displays is getting better, too, with Gemini now doing a better job of reliably understanding the voice commands and triggering them.
The update addresses a bug that could set alarm and timer volumes to zero. In affected cases, those volumes will now match the device volume.
Volume controls will behave more predictably, too. Previously, asking Gemini to change the volume on a device in another room could adjust the speaker you were talking to if it couldn’t find the intended device. Google says it has fixed this behavior.
Google Home adds more useful Matter controls
Alongside Gemini, the Google Home app is also getting several practical improvements. On Android, the app recognizes specific Matter closure types for compatible devices, such as garage doors, gates, windows, and cabinets, and displays the correct device icon and controls.
After the latest update, compatible Matter smart plugs and energy monitors will display real-time power usage and cumulative energy consumption directly on the device tiles and control screens. For the thermostat controller and Home View, Google is adding a shortcut so you can quickly switch to an energy-saving temperature before heading out.
On Android foldable phones, Google says you should get a better camera live view when folding or unfolding the device.
Google’s smart home hardware gets plenty of fixes
This time around, Google is also rolling out updates for its Nest and Google Home speakers, along with the Google TV streamer and Nest Wi-Fi. And this is more than just a general bug-fixing update.
The Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K are getting the August 2026 security patch alongside connectivity, streaming, and display improvements. For the Nest Wifi router and Wifi point, the new firmware adds enhanced mesh network resilience, DNS fallback, and stability improvements.
As for Google Home and Nest speakers, they get smoother streaming with less boomy bass and clearer playback at lower volume levels. Other fixes include disappearing speaker groups, Wi-Fi 7 connection failures, and Bluetooth playback pausing after a resume command.
Older Nest cameras migrated to Google Home are also getting a notable update. Google has improved Wi-Fi reconnection, fixed slow night vision activation on first-generation Nest Cams, and resolved audio sync issues and unexpected restarts on Nest Hello. The doorbell gets better person and Familiar Face detection, while Nest Cam IQ models receive a status light fix.
There are a lot of other improvements that you can find in Google’s exhaustive release notes here.
