Bungie has published a new official timeline for Destiny 2, and the first step is bringing back every piece of content the studio ever removed from the game.
In its October Community Update, posted by Bungie’s Josh Dean, the studio said the unvaulting covers campaigns, DLC stories, Raids, locations and more, with the work currently in pre-production. Production begins in February 2027, and Bungie estimates the process could take about 12 months, which could push the content’s return into 2028. No release date has been set.
“The franchise’s epic journey started over a decade ago, and the whole experience needs to be served to you all where you play today,” Bungie wrote in the update.
The plan reverses a year of bad news
Earlier this year Bungie canceled the planned Shattered Cycle expansion and said it would end all Destiny 2 support after a final June update, Monument of Triumph. In September, the studio reversed course and said it would resume work on the franchise. The unvaulting is the first concrete step of that comeback, and it effectively unwinds the Destiny Content Vault, the system Bungie used to strip older content out of the live game.
Dean and Studio Head Poria Torkan said in the update that they want to retell the whole story of the franchise before working on sequels or spin-offs.
Celebration, Legacy and the Menagerie
Alongside the unvaulting, the update announces a “Destiny 2 Celebration” event that will carry the game beyond Monument of Triumph, and a “Destiny Legacy” update. The Menagerie, the activity from 2019’s Season of Opulence, is officially returning with new rewards.
Bungie said a new progress bar will arrive in February, possibly with a clear release target and updated goals for the unvaulting work. What the Celebration event and the Legacy update will actually contain has not been detailed.
Destiny 2 is free to play on Steam.
