YouTube’s mobile app was designed primarily to watch videos when it first launched. But several years have passed since then, and YouTube now has a completely different set of priorities as it adapts to the realities of modern-day content.
In addition to improving the app as a whole, the company is also focusing on specific areas, such as Shorts, to not only compete with rival platforms but also meet the changing demands of mobile-first creators. It recently struck a partnership with Adobe to make short-form content creation easier with a bunch of new editing tools. Now, the company has announced another set of editing tools to provide creators with more ways to create Shorts.
On its official support page, Google made it official that it has started testing a new “Create” mode, which will open directly when you tap the Plus icon in the YouTube mobile app. The new “Create” mode will be the place where you’ll find a plethora of content creation tools, including ones that are powered by AI.
As per Google, the new “Create” mode will be a playground for users to create images, video clips, green screen backgrounds, music tracks, and more, thanks to the AI-generated features. Google hasn’t shared specific details about how AI will help users create images and videos, but it’ll likely require users to type a prompt.
This isn’t entirely new, because the YouTube mobile app already has experimental AI features for creating videos and images. Although not officially confirmed, they’ll likely work the same way as they do in the new “Create” mode. The announcement hasn’t specified what other content creator tools will be available to creators other than the ones powered by AI.
However, YouTube has explicitly said that this is an experiment, so the new “Create” mode is rolling out only to a limited set of users. According to the company, the purpose of this experiment is to ‘test new ways to effortlessly create Shorts and inspire users.’
If you see the new “Create” mode in the YouTube app, Google encourages you to send your feedback. The feedback matters because it gives you a chance to get your favorite feature included in the new “Create” mode in future releases of the app. However, since this is an experiment, there is also a possibility that the new “Create” will be canceled.
