One UI 8.5 quietly removes a key storage indicator

After months of beta releases, Samsung’s One UI 8.5 has finally started making its way out to users in stable, though it’s proving a tale as old as time to be true.

Newer isn’t always better, and it looks like that is the case with One UI 8.5’s Device Care menu.

One UI 8.5 finally arrives on Galaxy S25 phones in the US

Your Samsung phone’s biggest upgrade in years has arrived

If you’ve updated to One UI 8.5 and want to check the amount of free storage on your device, you’d either need to be good at mental math or have a calculator ready.

As pointed out by users that have already updated, the Device Care menu now does not list the “available” storage like it used to (via PiunikaWeb).

The first two screenshots in the Reddit post embedded above highlight what the menu looks like on One UI 8. The last screenshot is what the menu used to look like with One UI 8.

Previously, the menu clearly highlighted the device’s total storage, storage in use, and most importantly, the amount of storage available. Now, the menu only highlights the former two.

If you want to find out the exact available storage, you’d have to manually subtract the occupied storage from your device’s total storage. The change is especially annoying for users with 512GB or 1TB devices.

This isn’t a huge deal, but it definitely is the opposite of a quality of life change that adds unnecessary friction to the user experience.

For now, users have a workaround, though it might not be as reliable as you might have hoped. Some suggest using the storage widget on the home screen, though its data has been reported to ignore the system partition, causing a discrepancy between what the widget states and what the Device Care menu states.

I’m sure there are more changes like this one yet to be found. Have you seen an annoying change within One UI 8.5? Let us know in the comments below!
