iPhone Duo backlog estimates might be improving

October 20, 2026

Some iPhone Duo buyers who were told they’d have to wait until 2027 may be getting their phones much sooner.

Pre-orders for the Duo opened Friday, Oct. 16, and sold out almost immediately. Delivery estimates quickly slipped into late January 2027. Over the weekend, though, a number of customers began reporting that Apple had moved their delivery dates up, in some cases to the phone’s Friday, Oct. 23 launch.

Given the rush on the Duo, Apple has capped purchases at two per order. According to a post from TechDroider on X, the company is also canceling suspicious orders to curb reselling. Apple hasn’t confirmed the cancellations.

The earlier dates first appeared for buyers in Japan, according to 9to5Mac, which rounded up several of the reports. One Japanese user posted that their Duo, originally scheduled to arrive in December, was now set for launch day. 9to5Mac also flagged the trend on Twitter, noting that shipping dates appeared to be getting bumped up in Japan.

9to5Mac later updated its report to note that U.S. customers have started seeing earlier delivery windows, too. So far, the changes appear limited to orders placed directly through Apple, rather than through carriers or other retailers.

It’s not clear what changed. As 9to5Mac points out, Apple hasn’t publicly said why the estimates shifted, and it’s possible the new dates are a mistake that could be reversed. One possibility is that Apple padded its initial estimates as a precaution against the flood of orders. It’s also possible the original dates were a glitch, or that Apple’s supply simply improved. For now, it’s all speculation.

Mashable has reached out to Apple for comment and will update this story if we hear back.
