TL;DR
- Google is rolling out Chrome M156 for Googlebooks, fixing crashes involving extensions, tab management, and several website compatibility issues.
- The update improves fullscreen keyboard shortcuts, downloads, copying in Google Docs, and Chrome’s address bar.
- Multiple Chrome profiles, tab group syncing, and automatic Google Cast device discovery are still in development.
A desktop-class browser isn’t much good when your password manager crashes it, fullscreen apps hijack your keyboard shortcuts, or something as simple as copying a table becomes a headache. These are some of the frustrations Googlebook users have encountered with Chrome, and Google’s latest M156 update aims to fix them.
For starters, Chrome should no longer crash when you use 1Password or similar extensions with third-party autofill. It also fixed issues like extensions such as Teleparty opening farewell webpages, as well as a crash caused by dragging tabs between windows.

Fullscreen apps are getting their keyboard freedom back, too. Services like GeForce NOW previously intercepted Alt+Tab, preventing users from switching windows normally. That shortcut now works as expected, while holding Esc still exits fullscreen.
Elsewhere, Chrome M156 addresses several smaller annoyances that collectively made browsing unnecessarily awkward. Google has fixed:
- Undismissable third-party sign-in prompts on websites including Reddit and Canva.
- Clipboard errors when copying large tables, images, or selections in Google Docs.
- Facebook Live streams getting stuck buffering.
- Missing or incorrect website icons in the address bar.
- Broken right-click menus on certain Incognito page links.
Downloads are improving, too. A gradually rolling-out Save As dialog lets users choose filenames and destinations, while a separate fix prevents duplicate filenames from breaking extensions. The address bar also gets an Alt+Shift+Enter shortcut to open background tabs, better multiline text editing, and several AI Mode interface refinements.
But Google’s repair list isn’t finished. Multiple Chrome profiles, tab group syncing, and automatic discovery of local Google Cast devices remain in development. Meanwhile, users can manually enable Chrome’s Nearby devices or Local Network permission to help discover Cast devices.
Chrome M156 (156.0.8078.47 or higher) is rolling out through Google Play over the coming days. With Google promising updates every two weeks, the bigger test is how quickly the remaining gaps disappear.
