2022 Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander PHEV: Everything We Know

December 11, 2020

The aging Mitsubishi Outlander crossover you can spot at dealerships today was introduced in 2014, and is ready for a new generation with more modern styling and amenities. It looks like an all-new Outlander is exactly what we’re about to get. Between teaser images and revealing leaked images, the new 2022 Outlander‘s styling looks contemporary and aggressive, bringing it more in line with its rivals in this highly competitive midsize crossover segment (and stablemates like the Eclipse Cross, as well as the smaller Outlander Sport).

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Styling and Design

The 2022 Outlander‘s bold face is the most striking part of the new design, with the primary headlights mounted lower than turn signal and marker lamps, as is the trend these days. We see a similar design on the Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevrolet Blazer. The front fascia has a strong hourglass-shaped theme almost like the larger Hyundai Palisade, with a striking biplane grille, as seen in these leaked photos below. There’s a strong overall resemblance to the strangely-named 2019 Engelberg Tourer Concept, too, which builds on a theme seen in the 2016 PHEV GT concept, if anyone can currently recall anything from any year before 2020.

Perhaps more importantly, the new Outlander is chunkier and more trucklike, especially when compared to the too-car-like current model. We expect it to be slightly bigger, as well, although we expect the third row of seats to still be fairly cramped (hopefully less so).

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Engine and Drivetrain

Given the corporate tie-up between Mitsubishi and Nissan, there are reports that the non-hybrid 2022 Outlander will use a Nissan engine. In return, Mitus will provide its advanced PHEV system to Nissan for the Qashqai. We also expect the 2022 Outlander PHEV to use the same upgraded plug-in hybrid powertrain that debuted in the 2021 Outlander PHEV.  Oh, and by the way, the PHEV will be the only Outlander sold for the 2021 model year while everyone waits for the new 2022 model.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Interior Changes

The 2022 Outlander is said to have a significantly upgraded interior, with more refinement—something that the Outlander desperately needs. Even a 2016 refresh with an emphasis on the interior only barely moved the needle in the right direction. Mitsubishi hasn’t teased the interior yet, so we can only hope that the company has invested what it needs to in this area.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Reveal Date, Pricing, and On-Sale Timing

The wraps come off the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander in February, and it almost certainly go on sale later that year. We expect to have pricing and a firm on-sale date after the official reveal.
