New To Amazon Prime Video In January 2021: Face/Off, Dexter, Star Trek Beyond, And More

December 19, 2020

There’s no way around it–2020 has been an unusual year many of us will likely be thankful to put behind us. Luckily, the handful of days left for this year still have exciting new releases to look forward to (like and , both on Christmas Day). The less than two weeks 2020 has ahead will be a great runway for looking forward to what’s on offer from the likes of , , , and of course Amazon Prime Video. Check out Amazon’s release list for the month below.

Easily the most packed day for releases will be New Year’s Day, which will see a staggering 76 newcomers to Amazon’s platform. There’s pretty much something for everyone that day, but it’d be hard to top Face/Off as something to help set the appropriate tone for 2021. If you are correctly sensing a lack of any sarcasm whatsoever in the previous sentence, you should also check out our recent overview of (or rewatching) the utterly ridiculous and awesome 1997 action epic starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.

But if that doesn’t do it for you, also arriving that day is Star Trek Beyond, the 2016 sequel in the reboot series which also is the 13th film in the Star Trek film franchise overall. By all standards, the film didn’t dazzle critics or audiences, but its conventional plot and interest in having both Spock and Kirk searching for something different–they’re bored of going where no one has gone before–makes the film a bit of a curiosity. Even if you’ve seen it before, a rewatch is merited–it’s one of the quieter and more unusual entries in the Star Trek canon.

A lot of Amazon’s offerings next month will be heavy on everything in between the suggestions above, with no real rhyme or reason to them–a big grab bag. Again, on January 1, the 1990 dark humor-horror film Arachnophobia starring John Goodman and Jeff Daniels–which is about newly discovered prehistoric spiders wreaking havoc–is good cheesy fun. Of a similar vibe are the first eight seasons of Dexter, the Showtime drama about a forensic analyst who serially murders all his problems away. As a revival of that series is , now wouldn’t be a bad time to get hooked and give it a binge.

Below, you’ll find everything coming to Amazon Prime Video for the month of January.
