ChatGPT is experiencing an outage right now — you’re not alone

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

ChatGPT is arguably the most popular AI chatbot right now, which also means OpenAI has to do a great job to ensure it functions reliably for everyone. However, service outages are a reality, and even the best in business face them, sometimes for more than a year. Currently, it looks like ChatGPT is not performing to the best of its abilities in producing answers, thanks to a massive outage across different parts of the world.

ChatGPT experiences widespread outages, and here is what you need to know

Upon pressing Enter after typing their prompt, users get an error message that says “Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong,” with the “Retry” button next to it. We managed to get responses a few times, but it was too slow. On its official website, OpenAI has shared that it has been several hours since ChatGPT and its related services, like Sora and APIs, have been impacted. The company is currently investigating the issue, but sadly, it hasn’t posted a temporary workaround for this issue.

OpenAI hasn’t clarified which generations of its large language models are affected the most, either. However, you might be able to avoid getting the error message and get an answer by switching to a different model. According to a Techradar report, 4o-mini and 4o-mini-high are responding more reliably than others.

We expect the fix to arrive soon, as OpenAI has just posted on its official website that it’s identified the root cause of the issue and is ‘working on implementing a mitigation.’ If we go by users’ reports on Downdetector, while it isn’t working for the majority of the people, some users claim that ChatGPT is working again after a brief downtime.

Service outages are a stark reminder that users shouldn’t rely on a particular product too much. If you’re an avid ChatGPT user but can’t use it right now, this is the right time to learn some easy ways to incorporate Gemini into your daily life. It’ll certainly save you from situations like this in the future.
