GTA 6 is creating PS5 Pro shortages. Sony’s solution? Prove you’re a real gamer to enter a lottery to buy one

The release of Grand Theft Auto VI is still weeks away, yet anticipation for the game is already fueling PlayStation 5 Pro shortages in Japan.

While the much-anticipated title from Rockstar Games will be available for multiple consoles, players seeking the ultimate GTA 6 experience may be eyeing Sony’s most powerful console.

So, what’s Sony’s solution for the PS5 Pro shortage? A lottery that will determine who can buy the console. 

But, there’s an extra catch. The PlayStation maker is requiring that consumers prove they’ve put in time playing on a PlayStation before they can even enter for a chance to buy a console.

To enter the Sony Store lottery in Japan, consumers must use a Sony account that shows at least 60 hours of confirmed playtime on PS4 or PS5 consoles between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026.

If users meet those requirements, they can apply to purchase one PS5 Pro through October 7. Lottery winners will be informed by October 26 and can then make their purchase. They’ll receive the console in the first half of November.

GTA 6 comes out November 19.
