Modern Warfare 4 DMZ: Mission Choices Explained

October 6, 2026

Modern Warfare 4 is bringing DMZ back with more ways to choose how each deployment plays out. GameSpot’s overview says players can pick mission types with different risk levels, connecting those choices to a broader progression loop rather than making extraction the only goal.

That shift gives squads a clearer decision before they infil: take on a more demanding objective for a potentially greater payoff, or choose a lower-risk route and focus on getting out. The available overview confirms the return, a map, and expanded progression systems, but does not spell out exact rewards or mission-specific risk values.

A more deliberate DMZ loop

DMZ is presented as an evolution of Call of Duty’s extraction mode, with player choice doing more work across a run. Mission selection and progression are linked: deployments can serve a purpose beyond collecting loot and surviving long enough to extract, giving players another reason to weigh the objective against the danger.

The available GameSpot summary does not name the mission types or give a progression cap, so those specifics should not be assumed. What it does establish is the broad change: players get a variety of mission options with different levels of risk, alongside more substantial progression and choice.

That structure should feel familiar to anyone who enjoys planning a run around more than the gear they might bring home. It also puts the long-term loop in sharper focus: choosing what to attempt becomes part of how players shape their progress, rather than a decision made only after landing on the map.

Mission choices and deployment options

Activision’s official DMZ guide, published on the PlayStation Blog, adds detail on the deployment choices. It describes three options for heading into Hajin, each offering a different way to approach the map:

Deployment option What it offers
Story Missions Narrative objectives that can be selected and replayed for rewards.
Dynamic Operations Operations that award DMZ Cash and XP, with a Supply Drop for the squad on completion.
Free Roam A mission-free deployment for exploring Hajin.

The options give squads room to pursue structured objectives or take a less directed run. That flexibility supports the central promise of the return: deployments can be shaped around the kind of risk and activity a team wants, rather than funneling every match into the same extraction routine.

The FOB ties progression to preparation

The PlayStation Blog guide also describes the Forward Operating Base as DMZ’s command center for progression, gear, and deployment planning. It says the FOB can grow to include more than a dozen Stations as players complete Operations in Hajin, making the base part of the progression loop rather than just a menu between matches.

Preparation and deployment therefore feed into each other: players head into Hajin to complete objectives and collect resources, then return to a base that can expand alongside their progress. The guide also notes that Hajin has area-based Threat Levels, with noisy play bringing a stronger enemy response in some areas. That gives squads another reason to think about how they approach an objective before committing.

Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, according to the official PlayStation Blog guide. For DMZ, the meaningful change is the broader set of choices around each run: mission selection, risk, and progression are being framed as connected parts of the experience.
