Owlcat Recasts Osiris Reborn Male Lead as Blythe Melin

Owlcat Games has revealed the new face and voice of the male protagonist in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The performance players panned in this year’s playable beta is gone, and the character’s default model has been redesigned along the way.

The reveal came in an “An update from the team” video posted to Owlcat’s YouTube channel on November 6, 2026, which shows the reworked captain and introduces his new voice actor, Blythe Melin. The studio said the male captain’s default look drops the standard military template in favor of a more detailed, polished design for players to work with, and that Melin’s credits include Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Diablo IV and Ready or Not.

The feedback that started it

The recast traces back to the beta, where players called the male protagonist’s voice work flat and boring, and previews flagged the same problem. “While the voice actor for the male protagonist and J put in a lot of good work, they felt less expressive than we wanted,” the studio said in a blog post earlier this year. “Because of this, we are changing the voices of the male protagonist and J.”

Melin takes over both brothers, playing the captain as well as his more carefree and relaxed identical twin J. The U.S.-based actor is best known for animation work in the DC universe and has mostly done background NPC voices in games, so the role marks his step up to a lead. “Voicing both the Captain and J has been an incredible joy and a unique challenge compared to the rest of my work voicing in video games over the years,” Melin said in a statement.

Custom, but with a canon look

Players can customize the protagonist however they like, but Owlcat says a default look matters the way a canon Commander Shepard does, giving players a starting basis for their own captain. The studio is also reworking moments from the beta it found inconsistent or out of place, promising conversations with more natural, responsive and grounded character reactions.

As far as anyone can tell, Owlcat never named the actor it replaced, and it says details on the female protagonist’s voice and the rest of the cast will be shared at a later date. Whether the improvements appear in a second beta before launch is unknown.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn launches on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in Spring 2027, at a $49.99 price point, and Owlcat has said it is aiming for a length comparable to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
